What's the Best Weight For Your Height?
There's no single "best" weight for your height β it varies based on age, sex, muscle mass, and overall health. However, the NHS provides clear healthy weight ranges for adults based on BMI (body mass index). If you're between 18.5 and 24.9 BMI, you're within the healthy weight range for your height. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults, the NHS recommends slightly lower thresholds due to higher health risks at the same BMI. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal healthy weight range instantly, then check our weight converter to see how that translates across kg, stone, and pounds.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/mΒ²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure β it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution β it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage β a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
NHS Healthy Weight Ranges By Height
The NHS defines healthy weight using BMI (body mass index), calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For most UK adults, a healthy BMI sits between 18.5 and 24.9. This translates to different weights depending on your height:
- 5ft 3in (160cm) β healthy weight range approximately 47β63 kg (7st 5lbs β 9st 12lbs)
- 5ft 6in (168cm) β healthy weight range approximately 52β70 kg (8st 2lbs β 11st 0lbs)
- 5ft 9in (175cm) β healthy weight range approximately 58β78 kg (9st 1lbs β 12st 3lbs)
- 5ft 11in (180cm) β healthy weight range approximately 63β85 kg (9st 13lbs β 13st 5lbs)
These ranges are based on NHS guidance and UK health thresholds. However, BMI alone doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or where fat is stored. Your GP can provide personalised advice about whether your weight is healthy for you.

Beyond BMI β What Else Matters?
Healthy weight isn't purely about numbers on the scales. The NHS also considers waist circumference because where you carry weight affects health risk. For men, a waist over 94cm (37in) signals increased risk; over 102cm (40in) is high risk. For women, it's 80cm (31.5in) increased risk, 88cm (34.5in) high risk. Age, fitness level, and medical history all matter too. Someone with high muscle mass might have a higher BMI but lower health risk than someone lighter with less muscle. This is why weight management through balanced nutrition and physical activity matters more than hitting a specific number. If you're concerned about your weight or health, your GP can assess your individual situation and discuss options including lifestyle changes or, if appropriate, prescription support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What if my weight is above the healthy range for my height?
Being above the healthy range increases health risks including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems. Even a 5βclinically studied weight loss can improve health significantly. Talk to your GP about weight management strategies, which might include dietary changes, increased activity, or prescription support if clinically appropriate. Our weight converter and BMI calculator can help you track progress.
Does muscle mass affect the best weight for my height?
Yes. Muscle is denser than fat, so athletes or very active people may have a higher BMI but lower body fat percentage and lower health risk. BMI is a screening tool, not a perfect measure. Your GP can assess whether your weight is healthy for you individually, considering your fitness level and muscle mass.
Are the healthy weight ranges different for men and women?
No. The NHS BMI categories (18.5β24.9 healthy) apply equally to men and women at the same height. However, body fat percentage guidelines differ slightly by sex. Women typically have higher natural body fat percentages than men at the same fitness level, which is normal and healthy.
What's the difference between healthy weight and ideal weight?
Healthy weight is a range defined by BMI that minimises health risks β it's based on population health data. Ideal weight is more individual and depends on your genetics, fitness level, age, and personal goals. For most people, any weight within the healthy BMI range (18.5β24.9) is ideal. Your GP can help define what's ideal for you.
Can I use weight converters to track weight loss progress?
Absolutely. Our free weight converter helps you switch between kg, stone, and pounds β useful if you're tracking weight loss over time or comparing measurements. For tracking weight loss projections with medication like GLP-1 injections, try our GLP-1 weight loss calculator, which estimates potential outcomes alongside lifestyle changes.
