What Are the Best Weight Loss Drinks?

When it comes to weight management in the UK, what you drink matters as much as what you eat. Water, green tea, black coffee, and herbal infusions are among the most effective weight loss drinks because they contain few or no calories whilst supporting hydration and metabolism. Unlike sugary soft drinks or high-calorie alternatives, these beverages fit easily into a reduced-calorie diet and can help you feel fuller between meals. Combined with balanced nutrition and increased physical activity, the right drink choices support sustainable weight loss. Your GP can advise on a personalised approach to nhs weight loss that works for your lifestyle.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Water and Hydration — The Foundation of Weight Loss

Water is the single most effective weight loss drink and forms the foundation of any successful weight management strategy. Drinking adequate water (typically 6–8 glasses per day, or roughly 1.5–2 litres) supports several weight loss mechanisms: it increases satiety, helping you feel fuller and eat less; it supports kidney function during weight loss; and it has zero calories. Some evidence suggests drinking water before meals may help reduce overall calorie intake. Herbal teas (such as camomile, peppermint, or ginger) and black tea are also calorie-free or near-calorie-free alternatives that add flavour without undermining your weight management efforts. Avoid adding sugar, honey, or high-calorie milk to any beverage—these additions quickly add 50–150 extra calories per drink. Use our free BMI calculator to track how your weight management journey is progressing, and remember that consistent hydration supports every aspect of weight loss.

Drinks to Limit or Avoid for Effective Weight Loss

Sugary soft drinks, energy drinks, flavoured coffees, and sweetened juices are significant obstacles to weight loss because a single serving can contain 150–300+ calories and 30–60g of sugar—equivalent to multiple meals' worth of energy. Even "diet" soft drinks, whilst calorie-free, may trigger cravings and don't provide the metabolic support of water or tea. Alcohol is also high in calories: a standard glass of wine contains 100–150 calories, beer 150–200 calories, and spirits mixed drinks 200–400+ calories. If you're pursuing nhs weight loss or considering prescription weight loss medication, reducing or eliminating these high-calorie drinks is essential. Our progress tracker can help you monitor your daily hydration and drink choices alongside your weight loss journey. Small, consistent changes to what you drink compound into significant, sustainable results.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Can green tea really help with weight loss?

Green tea contains caffeine and catechins, compounds that may modestly support fat oxidation and metabolism. Research shows a very small calorie-burning effect, but it's not substantial on its own. Green tea is beneficial mainly because it's a low-calorie, hydrating alternative to sugary drinks. Combined with a calorie deficit and regular activity, it supports weight management—but it's not a weight loss solution by itself.

Is coffee a good weight loss drink?

Black coffee (unsweetened) is excellent for weight management—it's virtually calorie-free and caffeine may slightly boost metabolism and reduce appetite. However, adding sugar, syrups, or high-calorie milk transforms coffee into a high-calorie beverage that works against weight loss. For best results, drink coffee black or with a splash of unsweetened plant-based or dairy milk. Limit to 3–4 cups daily.

What about protein shakes for weight loss?

High-protein drinks can support weight loss when used as meal replacements or snacks because protein increases satiety and helps preserve muscle during weight loss. However, many commercial protein shakes contain 150–300+ calories and added sugars. Choose shakes with at least 15–20g protein, under 200 calories, and minimal added sugar. Use them as part of a structured weight management plan, not as a supplement to regular meals.

Should I drink diet fizzy drinks for weight loss?

Diet soft drinks have zero calories and won't directly increase weight, but they may not support weight loss either. Some research suggests artificial sweeteners can trigger cravings for sweet foods, potentially leading to overeating. Water, tea, and coffee are better choices. If you enjoy fizzy drinks, occasional diet versions are acceptable, but they shouldn't replace water as your primary beverage.

How do weight loss drinks compare to prescription weight loss medication?

Drinks support weight loss through hydration and calorie reduction, but prescription medications like GLP-1 injections work through different mechanisms—reducing appetite and supporting feeling fuller after meals. Our GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help estimate potential outcomes with medication alongside lifestyle changes. Drinks are free, accessible tools; medication requires a prescription and clinical assessment from your GP or a licensed prescriber.
