Bleeding After Mounjaro Injection — What You Should Know

Injection site bleeding is a possible side effect of Mounjaro, though it's relatively uncommon. Both Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are weekly weight loss injections used in the UK, and both can cause injection site reactions including minor bleeding or bruising. Understanding what's normal, when to be concerned, and how this compares between the two medications can help you use these treatments safely and confidently. This guide covers the facts about bleeding after Mounjaro injection and how it differs from other weekly weight loss injection options available in the UK.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Bleeding After Mounjaro vs Wegovy — Clinical Context

Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are once-weekly weight loss injections licensed in the UK. Minor injection site bleeding is listed as a common side effect for both medications, though the frequency and severity can vary between individuals.

From clinical trials:

  • Mounjaro (SURMOUNT trials): Injection site reactions, including redness, bruising, and minor bleeding, occurred in a notable percentage of participants. Most reactions were mild and temporary.
  • Wegovy (STEP trials): Similar injection site reaction rates were reported. Bleeding or bruising was mild in the vast majority of cases.

The key difference is mechanism: Mounjaro is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, while Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist only. Neither mechanism directly increases bleeding risk — injection site reactions are related to the injection itself rather than how the medication works.

When to Seek Medical Advice About Injection Bleeding

Minor bleeding or light bruising at the injection site is normal and usually resolves within hours to days. However, contact your GP or healthcare provider if you experience:

  • Bleeding that doesn't stop after 5–10 minutes of gentle pressure
  • Severe bruising or swelling that worsens over time
  • Signs of infection (warmth, increasing redness, pus, fever)
  • Repeated bleeding at injection sites despite rotating sites
  • Bleeding elsewhere on your body

If you take anticoagulants (blood thinners) like warfarin or apixaban, inform your prescriber before using Mounjaro or Wegovy — they may advise on injection technique or monitoring. Your prescriber will assess individual suitability during your clinical assessment.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is bleeding after a Mounjaro injection normal?

Minor bleeding or light oozing at the injection site is a known side effect and usually resolves quickly. It's typically not a cause for concern. However, persistent or heavy bleeding warrants medical attention. Always rotate injection sites to minimise local tissue damage.

Does Mounjaro cause more bleeding than Wegovy?

Clinical trial data shows similar injection site reaction rates for both medications. Neither is clearly linked to increased bleeding risk compared to the other. Individual variation is significant — some people experience no bleeding with either medication, whilst others may see minor reactions.

Can I reduce injection site bleeding with Mounjaro?

Yes. Rotate injection sites each week between abdomen, upper thigh, and upper arm. Use a new needle for each injection. Allow the KwikPen to reach room temperature before injecting. Ensure your skin is clean and dry. Press gently rather than aspirating (pulling back on the plunger).

Should I stop Mounjaro if I have bleeding at the injection site?

Minor bleeding does not require stopping your medication. Continue as prescribed unless your GP advises otherwise. If you're concerned about bleeding frequency or severity, discuss with your prescriber — they may adjust your injection technique or refer you for further assessment.

Does bleeding after injection affect weight loss with Mounjaro?

No. Minor injection site bleeding does not affect how Mounjaro works or its ability to support weight loss when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Clinical trial results remain unaffected by minor injection site reactions.
