BMI 24 for Females — What Does It Mean?
A BMI of 24 puts you in the healthy weight range according to NHS guidelines. This is good news — it means your weight is within the target zone for your height, with lower risk of weight-related health conditions. However, BMI is just one health indicator. We'll explain what a BMI of 24 means, how it's calculated, and what other factors matter for your overall health.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
Understanding BMI 24 and the Healthy Weight Range
According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI range for adults is 18.5 to 24.9. A BMI of 24 sits comfortably in this range, indicating a healthy weight for your height. To understand what this means for you specifically, use our free BMI calculator above to see your personal BMI based on your exact height and weight.
The BMI formula is straightforward: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For example, a woman who is 5ft 6in (1.68m) tall and weighs 67kg would have a BMI of 24. The same BMI can represent different weights depending on height — that's why height matters just as much as weight.
NHS BMI categories in the UK are: underweight (below 18.5), healthy weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25.0–29.9), obese class I (30.0–34.9), and severely obese (40.0+). Your BMI of 24 places you in the healthy zone, which is associated with lower risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers.

BMI Limitations and What Else to Consider
While a BMI of 24 is reassuring, it's important to understand that BMI has limitations. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat — an athletic woman with significant muscle mass might have a higher BMI but still be very healthy. It also doesn't account for where fat is stored; belly fat poses greater health risks than fat distributed elsewhere.
To get a fuller picture of your health, also consider your waist circumference. For women, a healthy waist measurement is under 80cm (31.5in). You might also track energy levels, fitness improvements, and how you feel — these are just as important as the number on the scale. If you have health concerns, your GP can assess your individual risk factors beyond BMI.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What weight is a BMI of 24 for a woman?
This depends on height. For a woman 5ft 6in (1.68m) tall, a BMI of 24 is roughly 67kg (10st 7lbs). For a woman 5ft 4in (1.63m) tall, it's about 64kg (10st 1lb). Use our free weight converter and BMI calculator above to find your exact weight for your height.
Is a BMI of 24 considered healthy?
Yes. NHS guidelines define healthy BMI as 18.5 to 24.9, so a BMI of 24 is squarely in the healthy range. This is associated with lower risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Can I have a BMI of 24 and still be overweight?
No. If your BMI is 24, you are by definition not overweight according to NHS BMI categories. However, BMI doesn't account for muscle mass, so an athletic person might have a higher BMI but lower body fat than someone with a BMI of 24.
What weight should I aim for if my BMI is 24?
If you already have a BMI of 24, you're in a healthy range and don't need to lose weight for health reasons. Focus instead on maintaining this through balanced nutrition and physical activity. If you're below BMI 24 and healthy, no change is needed.
Are there different BMI ranges for women?
No, the NHS BMI categories are the same for women and men. However, if you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends slightly lower thresholds (healthy BMI 18.5–22.9) because these groups face higher health risks at the same BMI levels.
