BMI Chart for Women in kg — NHS Categories & Healthy Weight Ranges

A BMI chart for women in kg helps you understand where your weight falls within NHS health categories. Using the standard BMI formula, you can find your personal BMI and see how it compares to NHS recommendations for healthy weight, overweight, and obese ranges. Our free BMI calculator on this page lets you check your BMI instantly, but understanding the chart itself — and what the NHS says about each range — is equally important for making informed health decisions.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

NHS BMI Categories and What They Mean for Women

The NHS BMI chart for women uses the same categories as for men, based on your weight in kg and height. Your BMI is calculated using the formula: weight (kg) ÷ height (metres)². The NHS recognises these standard BMI ranges:

  • Underweight: BMI below 18.5
  • Healthy weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25.0 to 29.9
  • Obese (Class I): BMI 30.0 to 34.9
  • Obese (Class II): BMI 35.0 to 39.9
  • Severely obese (Class III): BMI 40.0 and above

For women of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds due to increased health risk at lower weights. For these groups, a healthy BMI starts at 18.5 but drops to 22.9 as the upper healthy range, with overweight starting at 23.0. This reflects evidence showing these populations face higher risks of type 2 diabetes and heart disease at lower BMI levels. NHS Weight Management Pathway and When to Seek Help

If your BMI chart shows you fall outside the healthy range, the NHS recommends speaking to your GP. Your doctor can assess your individual health, discuss any weight-related health conditions you may have, and explain the NHS weight management pathway. This typically starts with tier 1 support — self-help tools and lifestyle advice. For some people, tier 2 or tier 3 services (specialist weight management programmes) may be recommended, which can include behaviour change support, dietary guidance, and in some cases, prescription medications following a clinical assessment. Remember that BMI is a screening tool only — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or where fat is stored. Your waist measurement and overall health picture matter too. A GP can give you personalised advice about what your BMI means for your individual health.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is a healthy BMI for women according to the NHS?

The NHS defines a healthy BMI for most women as 18.5 to 24.9. However, for women of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends a healthy range of 18.5 to 22.9 due to higher health risks at lower BMI levels in these populations. Use our BMI calculator to find your personal healthy weight range based on your height.

How do I calculate my BMI from a chart in kg?

The BMI formula is: weight (kg) ÷ height (metres)². For example, if you weigh 65kg and are 1.65m tall, your BMI is 65 ÷ (1.65)² = 23.9, which falls in the healthy weight range. Our free BMI calculator on this page does this instantly — simply enter your weight in kg and height, and it shows your BMI and category.

At what BMI should I talk to my GP about my weight?

If your BMI is consistently above 25.0 (overweight) or if you have a BMI of 23.0 or above with weight-related health conditions like type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure, it's worth discussing with your GP. They can assess your individual circumstances and discuss support options available through the NHS.

Why are BMI thresholds lower for some ethnic groups?

Research shows that South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean populations develop weight-related health problems like type 2 diabetes and heart disease at lower BMI levels than other groups. The NHS therefore recommends lower BMI thresholds (healthy range 18.5–22.9 instead of 18.5–24.9) to identify health risks earlier in these communities.

What should I do if my BMI falls in the obese category?

If your BMI is 30.0 or above, speak to your GP. You may be eligible for NHS weight management support, which could include tier 2 or tier 3 services, behaviour change programmes, and in some cases, prescription weight loss medications following a clinical assessment. Your GP will discuss options tailored to your health.
