What is the BMI for an Average Male in the UK?

The average UK adult male weighs approximately 85.7 kg (13 stone 7 lbs) and is around 175.3 cm (5 ft 9 in) tall, which gives an average BMI of approximately 27.9. According to NHS guidelines, this falls into the overweight category (BMI 25–29.9), even though it represents a typical UK male. Understanding where your personal BMI sits relative to these averages, and what that means for your health, is an important first step. What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Average Male BMI and Healthy BMI Ranges for Men

The average UK male BMI of 27.9 reflects that many men in the UK are classified as overweight by the NHS BMI formula. However, individual BMI varies significantly based on height, muscle mass, and body composition. The healthy BMI range recognised by the NHS is 18.5 to 24.9 for all adults. For a typical male who is 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) tall, a healthy weight would be approximately 57–75 kg (9 st 0 lb to 11 st 10 lb).

  • Healthy BMI: 18.5–24.9 (ideal weight range)
  • Overweight: 25.0–29.9 (like the average UK male)
  • Obese Class I: 30.0–34.9
  • Obese Class II: 35.0–39.9
  • Severely obese: 40.0 and above

The BMI categories UK are standardised across the NHS. To calculate your personal BMI, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. Our BMI calculator on this page does this instantly for you.

BMI Limitations and What Else Matters for Male Health

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has important limitations, especially for men. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat — a muscular male with low body fat may have a high BMI but excellent health. BMI limitations also mean it doesn't account for where fat is stored; excess abdominal fat carries higher health risks than fat stored elsewhere. For a more complete picture of health, consider your waist circumference alongside BMI. The NHS recommends that men maintain a waist measurement below 94 cm (37 in); above 102 cm (40 in) indicates significantly elevated health risk. Combine BMI assessment with regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, and regular health checks with your GP for the most accurate health picture.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is a BMI of 27.9 (the average male BMI) overweight?

Yes, according to NHS guidelines. A BMI of 27.9 falls in the overweight category (25–29.9). However, this reflects that many UK men are classified as overweight rather than indicating that being average is unhealthy. Your GP can provide personalised advice on whether your specific BMI and weight are appropriate for your health and circumstances.

What is a healthy BMI for an average-height male?

For a male who is 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) tall, the healthy BMI range is 18.5–24.9, which corresponds to approximately 57–75 kg (9 st to 11 st 10 lb). However, healthy weight varies by individual body frame and muscle mass. Use our BMI calculator to find the healthy weight range for your specific height.

Why does the average UK male have a higher BMI than the healthy range?

The average reflects population-level trends rather than optimal health. Factors include sedentary lifestyles, dietary patterns, and natural variation in body composition. Many UK men are in the overweight category, but this doesn't mean it's unavoidable — even modest weight loss can significantly improve health outcomes.

How accurate is BMI for men?

BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations for men, particularly those with significant muscle mass. A muscular man may have a high BMI despite low body fat. BMI also doesn't account for where fat is stored or individual health conditions. Always combine BMI assessment with waist measurement and professional health advice.

What should I do if my BMI is higher than the healthy range?

If your BMI is above 24.9, speak with your GP, who can assess your individual health risks and discuss options. The NHS recommends losing weight at 0.5–1 kg per week alongside increased physical activity and balanced nutrition. Try our GLP-1 weight loss calculator to explore how structured approaches might help you.
