BMI for Men — UK Health Chart Explained
A BMI (body mass index) for men is calculated the same way for all adults: weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The NHS BMI formula helps determine whether an adult man falls into a healthy weight range, overweight category, or obese range. This guide explains the BMI ranges for men in the UK, how to calculate your own BMI, and what your result means for your health. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal BMI instantly.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
BMI Categories for Men — NHS Guidelines
The NHS BMI categories are the same for men and women. Here's the standard BMI range UK guide:
- Underweight: BMI below 18.5
- Healthy weight: BMI 18.5–24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25.0–29.9
- Obese (Class I): BMI 30.0–34.9
- Obese (Class II): BMI 35.0–39.9
- Severely obese (Class III): BMI 40.0 and above
The BMI formula is: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For example, a man weighing 80kg and 1.75m tall would have a BMI of 26.1, placing him in the overweight category. If you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower healthy BMI thresholds: 18.5–22.9 for healthy weight, reflecting higher health risks at standard BMI levels for these populations.

BMI Limitations & What Else Matters
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has important BMI limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat — an athletic man with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat. BMI also ignores where fat is stored; men carrying excess weight around the waist face higher cardiovascular risk than those with fat distributed elsewhere. Your GP can assess your overall health picture beyond BMI. Waist circumference is also important: men with a waist over 94cm (37 inches) have increased health risk, and over 102cm (40 inches) indicates high risk. Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What's considered a healthy BMI for men in the UK?
According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI is 18.5 to 24.9 for most adults, including men. However, South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean men should aim for a BMI of 18.5 to 22.9, as they face higher disease risk at standard thresholds. Your GP can provide personalised advice based on your individual health.
How do I calculate my BMI?
The BMI formula is: weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (weight ÷ height²). For example, 80kg ÷ (1.75²) = 26.1 BMI. Use our free BMI calculator on this page to calculate your personal BMI instantly without doing the maths yourself.
What does a BMI of 30 mean for a man?
A BMI of 30 falls into the obese (Class I) category according to NHS guidelines. This suggests increased health risk, including higher likelihood of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Your GP can assess your individual health and discuss appropriate next steps.
Is BMI accurate for muscular men?
No — BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. An athletic or very muscular man may have a high BMI but actually have low body fat and good health. In this case, waist circumference and overall fitness are better health indicators than BMI alone.
Should men aim for a different BMI than women?
No — the NHS BMI categories are identical for men and women. However, men tend to carry weight differently (more around the waist), which is why waist measurement also matters. Discuss your personal healthy weight range with your GP.
