What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
How to Calculate BMI and Understand Your Range
The BMI formula is straightforward: divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared (kg ÷ height(m)²). For example, a man who is 1.75m tall and weighs 85kg has a BMI of approximately 27.8, which falls into the overweight category.
The NHS BMI categories for men are:
- Below 18.5 = Underweight
- 18.5–24.9 = Healthy weight
- 25.0–29.9 = Overweight
- 30.0–34.9 = Obese (Class I)
- 35.0–39.9 = Obese (Class II)
- 40.0+ = Severely obese (Class III)
For men of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds — a healthy weight range starts at 18.5 but overweight begins at 23.0 instead of 25.0, because these groups face higher cardiovascular and diabetes risk at the same BMI levels. BMI Limitations and What Else Matters
BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. A man with significant muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat — so BMI alone doesn't tell the whole story. Waist circumference is equally important: for men, a waist over 94cm (37 inches) indicates increased health risk, and over 102cm (40 inches) indicates high risk, regardless of BMI.
Your GP can assess your individual health in context — including blood pressure, cholesterol, fitness level, and family history. If you're concerned about your weight or health, a conversation with your GP is always the best next step. Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is a healthy BMI for a man in the UK?
According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI for men is between 18.5 and 24.9. However, for men of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends a healthy range of 18.5 to 22.9 due to higher health risks at higher BMIs in these populations.
Is BMI accurate for men with muscle?
No. BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so muscular men may have a high BMI despite low body fat. Waist circumference is a better indicator in these cases — over 102cm (40 inches) suggests increased health risk for men.
Can I use a BMI calculator for weight loss planning?
Yes. Your BMI helps identify whether you're in a healthy range. If weight loss is needed, our free GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help estimate potential results with lifestyle changes or prescription medication if appropriate.
Does BMI change with age?
The BMI formula doesn't change with age, but health risks associated with the same BMI may change. Older men may benefit from a slightly higher BMI for bone health. Your GP can advise on what's right for you personally.
What should I do if my BMI is high?
Start by discussing your health with your GP. Small changes — like reducing portion sizes and increasing activity — can help. Your GP can also assess whether prescription weight loss treatment might be appropriate for you based on your overall health.
