BMI Ranges for Men — What's Healthy?
BMI (body mass index) is a useful screening tool that helps determine whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. For men in the UK, the NHS defines specific BMI ranges that indicate underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obese categories. Understanding where your BMI falls can help you assess your health risk and take action if needed. Use our free BMI calculator above to check your personal BMI instantly, or read on to understand the standard ranges and how they apply to you.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
NHS BMI Categories and Ranges for Men
According to NHS guidelines, BMI categories are the same for all adults regardless of sex. The BMI formula is straightforward: weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For men, here are the standard BMI categories UK health professionals use:
- Underweight: BMI below 18.5
- Healthy weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25.0 to 29.9
- Obese (Class I): BMI 30.0 to 34.9
- Obese (Class II): BMI 35.0 to 39.9
- Severely obese (Class III): BMI 40.0 and above
A healthy BMI for men falls between 18.5 and 24.9. If your BMI exceeds the overweight BMI threshold of 25.0, your risk of weight-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure begins to increase. The higher your BMI climbs, the greater these risks become.

BMI Limitations and Complementary Health Measures
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has important BMI limitations. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat — a muscular man may have a high BMI despite low body fat. It also ignores where fat is stored; excess weight around the waist poses greater health risks than weight stored elsewhere. For a more complete health picture, your GP may also assess your waist circumference. For men, a waist measurement over 94cm (37 inches) indicates increased health risk, and over 102cm (40 inches) indicates high risk. Combined with your BMI, waist measurement provides a clearer view of your cardiovascular health and overall risk profile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is a healthy BMI range for men in the UK?
The NHS defines a healthy BMI for men as between 18.5 and 24.9. This range suggests your weight is proportionate to your height and generally poses lower risk of weight-related health conditions. Use our BMI calculator above to find your personal BMI instantly.
How do I calculate my BMI as a man?
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For example, a man weighing 80kg and 1.80m tall would calculate: 80 ÷ (1.80 × 1.80) = 24.7 BMI. The weight converter on this page can help you switch between units.
At what BMI do health risks increase for men?
Health risks begin to increase when BMI reaches 25.0 (overweight category). However, even modest weight loss—as little as 5–10% of body weight—can reduce risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions associated with excess weight.
Why doesn't BMI account for muscle mass?
BMI only considers height and weight; it cannot distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes and very muscular men may have a higher BMI despite low body fat. Your GP can assess your overall health beyond BMI using waist circumference and other measures.
What should I do if my BMI is outside the healthy range?
If your BMI is above 24.9, speak to your GP. They can assess your individual health, discuss lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, and determine whether further support or intervention is appropriate for you.
