BMI Weight Graph: Understanding Your Healthy Weight Range
A BMI weight graph is a visual chart showing the relationship between your weight and height, helping you understand where your weight falls on the NHS BMI scale. These graphs plot weight against height to show which BMI category you're in — from underweight through to obese. Understanding your position on a BMI weight graph is a simple way to check if your weight is within a healthy range for your height. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your exact BMI and see where you fall on the scale instantly.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
How BMI Weight Graphs Work and NHS Categories
A BMI weight graph plots your weight in kilograms (or stone) against your height in centimetres to calculate your BMI and show which BMI category UK guidelines you fall into. The BMI formula is weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared — simple to calculate using our free tool above.
- Underweight: BMI below 18.5 — may indicate nutritional deficiency
- Healthy weight: BMI 18.5–24.9 — associated with lowest health risks
- Overweight: BMI 25.0–29.9 — increased risk of weight-related conditions
- Obese Class I: BMI 30.0–34.9 — higher health risk
- Obese Class II: BMI 35.0–39.9 — significantly elevated risk
- Severely obese: BMI 40.0+ — very high health risk
For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower healthy BMI thresholds — healthy range is 18.5–22.9 instead of 18.5–24.9. This reflects higher cardiovascular and diabetes risk in these populations at standard BMI levels.

BMI Limitations and Complementary Health Measures
While BMI weight graphs are useful screening tools, they have important limitations. BMI limitations include that the formula cannot distinguish between muscle and fat — athletes may have high BMI but low body fat. BMI also doesn't account for where fat is stored, age, bone density, or pregnancy. A more complete health picture includes waist circumference measurement: men over 94cm (37in) have increased risk; over 102cm (40in) have high risk. Women over 80cm (31.5in) have increased risk; over 88cm (34.5in) have high risk. Combine your BMI weight graph result with waist measurement and discussion with your GP for a full health assessment. How We Built These Tools
Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.
All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.
We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What does my BMI weight graph position mean for my health?
Your position on a BMI weight graph indicates your health risk category. Healthy BMI (18.5–24.9) is associated with the lowest risk of weight-related diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Higher BMI increases risk, but individual health also depends on fitness, diet, waist circumference, and medical history. Discuss your personal health with your GP.
Can I use a BMI weight graph if I'm very muscular?
No — BMI weight graphs aren't reliable for very muscular people, including athletes and regular weight trainers. Muscle weighs more than fat, so you may have a high BMI despite low body fat. Body composition analysis or waist-to-height ratio are better measures for athletic individuals.
Are BMI weight graphs different for men and women?
The BMI formula and NHS categories are identical for men and women. However, healthy body fat percentage ranges differ by sex, and some conditions (like polycystic ovary syndrome) may affect women's weight differently. Your GP can provide personalised guidance based on your individual health.
Why does my BMI weight graph show a different category to my friend at the same weight?
Because BMI is calculated from both weight and height. Two people can weigh the same but have very different heights and therefore different BMIs. A taller person weighing 80kg will have a lower BMI than a shorter person weighing 80kg. Use our free BMI calculator to check your exact BMI.
What's the difference between BMI range UK guidelines and other countries?
The NHS BMI categories (18.5–24.9 healthy range) are based on research showing lowest health risk in the general UK population. However, the NHS recognises that South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults face higher risk at lower BMI levels, so adjusted thresholds apply. These reflect genetic and metabolic differences between populations.
