BMR Calculation — What Your Basal Metabolic Rate Means
Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at rest to maintain basic functions like breathing, circulation, and cell production. Understanding your BMR is useful for weight management planning, as it shows your baseline energy expenditure before accounting for daily activity. This UK health guide explains how BMR is calculated, what it means for your weight, and how it fits into broader healthy weight management. Knowing your BMR can help you set realistic dietary targets and understand your individual metabolism.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
How to Calculate Your BMR — The Two Main Formulas
Two widely used formulas calculate BMR based on your weight, height, age, and sex. The Harris-Benedict equation (updated 1984) is the most common in UK health practice:
- Men: BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 × weight in kg) + (4.799 × height in cm) − (5.677 × age)
- Women: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 × weight in kg) + (3.098 × height in cm) − (4.330 × age)
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990) is slightly more accurate for modern populations:
- Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) + 5
- Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) − 161
Both formulas give results in calories per day. Individual results vary based on genetics, muscle mass, and metabolism. Your GP or a registered dietitian can provide personalised guidance on what your BMR means for your health.

BMR vs TDEE — Why Both Matter for Weight Management
BMR is your resting metabolic rate — the calories you burn doing nothing. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is your BMR plus calories burned through activity. For weight management, TDEE is more practical: creating a calorie deficit relative to your TDEE (not BMR) supports gradual weight loss.
For example, if your BMR is 1,500 kcal and your TDEE is 2,200 kcal due to daily movement, a 500 kcal deficit means eating around 1,700 kcal daily for approximately 0.5 kg weight loss per week — the NHS-recommended safe rate.
Our free BMI calculator and weight converter help you understand your current weight status and healthy weight range, providing context for setting realistic calorie targets alongside your BMR.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.
We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is a normal BMR for UK adults?
Normal BMR varies widely by age, sex, weight, and height. A typical adult has a BMR of 1,200–1,800 kcal per day. Men generally have higher BMR than women due to greater muscle mass. Your GP can help interpret your personal BMR in context of your individual health.
Does BMR change with weight loss?
Yes. As you lose weight, your BMR decreases because your body requires fewer calories to maintain a smaller mass. This is why weight loss can plateau — your body's calorie requirement drops. This is normal and expected. Maintaining muscle through activity helps preserve BMR during weight loss.
Can BMR be increased?
Building muscle through resistance exercise is the main way to increase BMR, since muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue. Adequate protein intake, strength training 2–3 times weekly, and sufficient sleep support muscle maintenance. gradual weight management can reduce BMR — gradual loss (0.5–1 kg/week) helps preserve it.
How does BMR relate to weight loss medication?
Weight loss medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy work alongside your BMR by reducing appetite and supporting a calorie deficit. They don't directly change your BMR but help you consume fewer calories consistently. Sustainable results combine medication (if prescribed) with dietary changes and activity — your BMR calculation helps set realistic calorie targets.
Should I eat at or below my BMR for weight loss?
No. Eating below your BMR long-term is not sustainable and can slow metabolism. Instead, create a modest deficit below your TDEE (around 500 kcal/day for 0.5 kg/week loss). The NHS recommends this balanced approach. A registered dietitian or GP can help you set safe, personalised targets based on your BMR and activity level.
