Boiled Eggs and Weight Loss — When Medication Support Helps

Boiled eggs are a popular weight management food in the UK — high in protein, low in calories, and genuinely satiating. However, food choices alone don't always lead to lasting weight loss. If you've tried dietary changes like adding more protein, and you're still struggling with your weight management journey, prescription weight loss medication may be worth discussing with your GP. This guide covers the UK-licensed options available to eligible adults and how to find out if you qualify.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

UK-Licensed Prescription Weight Loss Medications

Three prescription-only weight loss medications are licensed in the UK for adults: Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy (semaglutide), and Saxenda (liraglutide). Mounjaro and Wegovy are once-weekly injections; Saxenda is a daily injection. Clinical trials showed that alongside reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, these medications helped participants lose an average of 15–21% of their body weight — though individual results vary significantly.

You are eligible if you have a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27–29.9 with a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea. Adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage may be eligible at lower BMI thresholds due to higher health risks at the same weight.

NHS vs Private Access in the UK

NHS route: Your GP can refer you to a specialist tier 3 weight management service. However, availability varies significantly by region — some areas have long waiting lists. Not all integrated care boards (ICBs) fund these services equally.

Private route: You can access prescription weight loss medication through a GPhC-registered online pharmacy following a clinical assessment with a UK-licensed prescriber. This is available without NHS referral and usually faster, though you'll pay privately (typically £129–£320 monthly depending on dose).

Either way, speak to your GP first. They can assess your individual health, discuss medication suitability, and advise on the best route for you.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Are boiled eggs alone enough for weight loss?

Boiled eggs are nutrient-dense and support satiety, making them valuable in a reduced-calorie diet. However, weight loss requires a sustained calorie deficit, which diet alone doesn't always achieve long-term. Combining dietary choices with increased physical activity, and consulting your GP about prescription support if needed, gives the best results.

What is a GLP-1 medication and how does it help?

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists mimic a natural hormone that helps regulate appetite and blood sugar. They may reduce cravings, help you feel fuller after smaller meals, and support weight management alongside lifestyle changes. Mounjaro and Wegovy are the most commonly prescribed in the UK for weight loss.

How do I know if I'm eligible for prescription weight loss medication?

You're likely eligible if your BMI is 30 or above, or 27–29.9 with a weight-related health condition like diabetes or high blood pressure. Use our free BMI calculator to check your personal BMI, then discuss eligibility with your GP. They can refer you to specialist services or discuss private options.

How much weight can I expect to lose on Mounjaro or Wegovy?

Clinical trials showed average weight loss of 15–21% of body weight over about a year, alongside diet and exercise. However, results vary considerably between individuals — some lose more, some less. Your GP or prescriber can discuss realistic expectations for your situation.

Can I get prescription weight loss medication on the NHS?

Yes — your GP can refer you to a specialist NHS weight management service (tier 3). However, availability and waiting times vary by region. Private access through online clinics is often faster, though costs apply. Ask your GP about both routes in your area.
