Can I Get Mounjaro On NHS Scotland?

Yes, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is available through NHS Scotland, but access is limited and regional. You'll need a referral to a specialist weight management service, and availability varies significantly across different Scottish health boards. NHS Scotland follows NICE guidance for tirzepatide eligibility. Most people access Mounjaro through private online prescribing services instead, which is faster and doesn't require a GP referral. This guide explains your options for getting Mounjaro in Scotland, including NHS and private routes.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

NHS Scotland Mounjaro Access

Mounjaro is approved by NICE for use within NHS specialist weight management services in Scotland. However, NHS access is not straightforward. You'll typically need a GP referral to your local health board's tier 3 specialist weight management service. These services are limited in capacity, and waiting times can be several months or longer depending on your health board area.

To be eligible for NHS Mounjaro in Scotland, you must have:

  • A BMI of 30 kg/m² or above, or
  • A BMI of 27–29.9 kg/m² with at least one weight-related health condition (type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease)
  • South Asian, Chinese, or Black African/Caribbean heritage: lower thresholds may apply (BMI 27.5+)

Important: NHS Scotland prioritises patients with type 2 diabetes or significant comorbidities. Weight management alone may not be sufficient for referral in some areas. Ask your GP whether your local health board offers tirzepatide through its specialist services.

Private Mounjaro Access In Scotland

Many Scottish adults access Mounjaro privately through GPhC-registered online prescribing services. This route doesn't require NHS referral and is often faster — typically available within days rather than months. You'll complete an online consultation with a UK-licensed prescriber who assesses your eligibility based on your medical history and current medications.

Private Mounjaro costs range from approximately £150–£300 per month depending on your dose. The KwikPen device contains four weekly doses. Our GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help you estimate potential outcomes at different tirzepatide doses. Unlike NHS access, private prescribing is available regardless of health board area — if you're eligible clinically, you can access treatment immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's the difference between NHS and private Mounjaro access in Scotland?

NHS access requires a GP referral to a specialist tier 3 weight management service, involves waiting lists, and eligibility criteria are strict. Private access requires an online clinical consultation, is faster (days rather than months), costs £150–£300/month, and doesn't depend on NHS referral or health board availability.

How long do you usually wait for Mounjaro on NHS Scotland?

Waiting times vary significantly by health board — some areas have 3–6 month waits, others considerably longer. Rural areas may have longer delays due to fewer specialist services. Private services typically provide Mounjaro within 7–14 days of approval.

Can I get Mounjaro through my GP directly on NHS Scotland?

No — Mounjaro is not routinely prescribed by GPs. You must be referred to a specialist tier 3 or tier 4 weight management service by your GP, where a specialist multidisciplinary team will assess you. Your GP cannot initiate tirzepatide treatment.

What health conditions make me eligible for NHS Mounjaro in Scotland?

You're eligible if you have type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal blood fats, obstructive sleep apnoea, or a history of heart attack or stroke alongside excess weight. Having a weight-related comorbidity significantly improves your chances of NHS approval.

Is Mounjaro the same as Ozempic or Wegovy?

No — Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist, whilst Wegovy (semaglutide) is a single GLP-1 agonist. Ozempic is also semaglutide but is licensed only for type 2 diabetes, not weight management. All three are different medications. Your prescriber will assess which is appropriate for you.
