Can Omeprazole Cause Weight Loss?

Omeprazole is a commonly prescribed medication for acid reflux and heartburn in the UK. While weight loss is not a primary effect of omeprazole, some patients do report changes in weight when taking this medication. The relationship between omeprazole and weight is complex and varies by individual. This guide explains what the evidence shows, how omeprazole may affect weight, and when you should speak to your GP about weight changes on this medication.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How Omeprazole Affects Weight

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid. Weight loss on omeprazole is uncommon but not impossible. Weight changes can occur through several mechanisms:

  • Reduced appetite: Some patients experience decreased appetite, partly due to improved digestive comfort after starting the medication
  • Nausea as a side effect: Nausea is a reported side effect affecting roughly 3–7% of users, which may reduce food intake
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency: Long-term omeprazole use can reduce B12 absorption, and deficiency may cause appetite changes or fatigue
  • Medication interactions: Omeprazole may affect absorption of other medications or nutrients, indirectly influencing weight

However, weight gain is more commonly reported than weight loss when using omeprazole. This may occur because improved acid control allows some patients to eat foods they previously avoided, or due to underlying factors unrelated to the medication.

When to Speak to Your GP About Weight Changes

If you experience significant weight loss or gain while taking omeprazole, it's important to discuss this with your GP. Unexplained weight changes can signal other health conditions — such as thyroid problems, nutritional deficiencies, or underlying digestive issues — not caused by omeprazole itself.

Your GP can:

  • Review whether omeprazole is still needed or if an alternative might suit you better
  • Check your B12 and other nutrient levels if you've been taking omeprazole long-term
  • Assess for other causes of weight change using your free BMI calculator and health history
  • Refer you to a weight management service if weight loss support is needed

Never stop taking omeprazole without medical advice, even if you notice weight changes — stopping suddenly can cause rebound acid reflux.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is weight loss a common side effect of omeprazole?

No, weight loss is uncommon with omeprazole. While some patients do report weight loss — usually due to reduced appetite or nausea — weight gain or no change is more typical. Any significant weight change should be discussed with your GP to rule out other causes.

Can omeprazole cause vitamin deficiencies that affect weight?

Yes. Long-term omeprazole use can reduce absorption of B12, calcium, and magnesium. B12 deficiency may cause fatigue, appetite changes, or weight loss. Your GP can order blood tests to check nutrient levels if you've been taking omeprazole for several months.

Should I stop taking omeprazole if I'm losing weight?

No — never stop omeprazole without speaking to your GP first. Stopping suddenly can cause severe rebound acid reflux. Instead, discuss your weight loss with your GP, who can investigate causes and decide whether the medication needs adjustment.

How is omeprazole different from weight loss medications like Wegovy?

Omeprazole is an acid reflux medication with no intended weight loss effect. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription-only GLP-1 injection specifically licensed for weight management in the UK, with clinical trial evidence supporting weight loss when used alongside lifestyle changes.

If I need to lose weight, can I use my GP weight loss pathway while taking omeprazole?

Yes. The NHS weight management pathway (tier 1–4 services) and prescription weight loss medications like Mounjaro or Wegovy can be used alongside omeprazole. Your GP will assess your full medical history, including all medications, before recommending any weight loss treatment.
