Can You Feel Hungry On Mounjaro? Appetite Changes Explained

Yes, you can still feel hungry while taking Mounjaro, though most people experience reduced appetite. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) works by activating GLP-1 and GIP receptors, which help signal fullness to your brain — but hunger isn't completely eliminated. How much appetite changes varies between individuals. Some people report minimal hunger on higher doses, whilst others notice only modest suppression. Understanding what to expect, and how Mounjaro compares to alternatives like Wegovy, helps you decide if this medication might suit your goals. Your prescriber can discuss individual suitability during a clinical assessment.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Mounjaro vs Wegovy: Hunger and Appetite Suppression

Both Mounjaro and Wegovy reduce appetite, but through slightly different mechanisms. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist — it activates two appetite-regulating pathways. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 agonist only, activating a single pathway. In the SURMOUNT-1 clinical trial, Mounjaro participants on the 15 mg dose reported significant appetite reduction. In the STEP-1 trial, Wegovy (semaglutide) at 2.4 mg also showed strong appetite suppression. However, neither medication eliminates hunger completely — you can still feel hungry, especially in the early weeks of treatment or on lower doses.

  • Mounjaro: dual mechanism may provide stronger appetite suppression for some people
  • Wegovy: single GLP-1 mechanism still effective, but may produce slightly less appetite reduction on average
  • Individual response varies — genetics, dose, and baseline metabolism all play a role
  • Hunger typically decreases as doses increase during titration

Trial data shows both medications help people feel fuller after smaller meals, but neither makes hunger disappear entirely. Many people still enjoy food and social eating — the change is in portion size and frequency of hunger signals.

What Affects Hunger Levels on These Medications

Several factors influence how much hunger you feel on either medication. Dose level is the strongest factor — higher doses (10–15 mg Mounjaro, 1.7–2.4 mg Wegovy) typically produce more appetite suppression than starting doses. Individual metabolism varies — some people are naturally more sensitive to GLP-1 signalling. Diet quality matters too; protein-rich foods help maintain satiety longer. Timing of food affects hunger — eating smaller, frequent meals works better than skipping meals then eating large portions.

Your GP or prescriber can discuss dose titration and dietary strategies during your clinical assessment. Using our free GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help you explore projected outcomes at different doses, which your prescriber may reference when personalising your treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Does Mounjaro completely stop you feeling hungry?

No. Mounjaro reduces appetite and helps you feel fuller after smaller meals, but you can still experience hunger — especially on lower doses or early in treatment. Complete appetite elimination is not typical and would not be healthy. Most people report feeling less interested in food and satisfied with smaller portions rather than no hunger at all.

Is Wegovy or Mounjaro better for appetite suppression?

Both are effective, but individual response varies. Mounjaro's dual GIP+GLP-1 mechanism may produce slightly stronger appetite suppression for some people, while Wegovy's single GLP-1 mechanism is also proven effective. Your prescriber will assess which is more suitable based on your health profile and medical history. Results differ from person to person.

When does appetite suppression start on Mounjaro?

Many people notice reduced appetite within 1–2 weeks of starting Mounjaro, though it typically increases as you progress through dose titration. The 2.5 mg starting dose produces modest appetite reduction; most significant changes occur at 7.5 mg and above. Appetite suppression may stabilise or slightly decrease after several months on a stable dose.

Can you feel hungry again after being on Mounjaro?

Yes. Some people report that appetite suppression plateaus or slightly reduces after months on a stable dose. This is sometimes called "tolerance" though it's not a true pharmacological tolerance — your body adjusts to the medication. Your prescriber may adjust your dose if appetite increases or weight loss plateaus.

What should I eat if I'm still hungry on Mounjaro?

Focus on protein-rich foods (chicken, fish, eggs, legumes), fibre (vegetables, whole grains), and water. These support satiety longer than simple carbohydrates. Eating smaller, frequent meals helps some people. Your GP or a dietitian can provide personalised advice. Staying hydrated and managing eating pace (eating slower) also helps maximise fullness signals.
