What's the Correct Weight For Your Height?
There's no single "correct" weight for any given height — instead, there's a healthy weight range based on your BMI, age, muscle mass, and individual health factors. The NHS defines healthy weight using BMI thresholds: a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for most UK adults. Your correct weight depends on your build, fitness level, and personal health goals. Use our free BMI calculator to find your healthy weight range instantly, and our weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and lbs. This guide explains how to calculate your ideal weight range and what it means for your health.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
How to Calculate Your Healthy Weight Range
The easiest way to find your healthy weight range is using the BMI formula: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². A healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9. To calculate the actual weight range for your height, multiply your height in metres squared by 18.5 (lower bound) and 24.9 (upper bound). For example, if you're 5ft 8in (1.73m), your healthy weight range is approximately 55.4 kg to 74.5 kg (or 8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs in stone and pounds). For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends a lower healthy BMI range of 18.5 to 22.9, meaning a narrower weight range. Factors That Affect Your "Correct" Weight
Your correct weight isn't just a number — it's influenced by several factors. Muscle mass weighs more than fat, so athletes may have a high BMI but low body fat. Age affects metabolism and muscle loss. Bone density and body frame size (small, medium, or large frame) also matter. Medical conditions and medications can affect weight. The NHS emphasises that BMI is a screening tool, not a complete picture of health. Waist circumference is also important: men over 94cm and women over 80cm face increased health risks. Rather than chasing a specific number, focus on reaching a weight within your healthy BMI range that feels sustainable for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is the correct weight for a 5ft 6in woman?
For a woman 5ft 6in (168cm) tall, the healthy weight range is approximately 53kg to 71kg (8st 5lbs to 11st 2lbs). This assumes a healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9. However, individual correct weight varies based on muscle mass, bone density, and personal health factors. Use our free BMI calculator to find your specific healthy range.
What is the correct weight for a 6ft man?
For a man 6ft tall (183cm), the healthy weight range is approximately 62kg to 83kg (9st 11lbs to 13st 1lb) based on a healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9. Individual correct weight depends on muscle mass, activity level, and build. Use our weight converter and BMI calculator to determine your personal healthy range.
Is there one "correct" weight for everyone at the same height?
No. Two people of identical height can have very different correct weights due to differences in muscle mass, bone density, age, genetics, and frame size. BMI provides a healthy range rather than a single correct number. Your GP can advise on what weight is right for your individual health circumstances.
How accurate is BMI for finding correct weight?
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat — athletes may have a high BMI but be very fit. It also doesn't account for where fat is stored. The NHS recommends using BMI alongside waist measurement and overall health assessment for a complete picture.
Should I aim for the lower or upper end of my healthy weight range?
Neither — aim for whatever weight within your healthy BMI range feels sustainable and realistic for you. Sustainable weight management is more important than hitting a specific number. Focus on healthy habits: balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep. Your GP can discuss your personal health goals.
