Drinking Alcohol on Mounjaro and Wegovy — What's Safe?

If you're taking Mounjaro (tirzepatide) or considering it as a weight management option, you may be wondering whether it's safe to drink alcohol. Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are prescription-only GLP-1 medications licensed in the UK, and alcohol consumption is an important consideration for anyone using these injections. There are some real differences in how these medications interact with alcohol, and understanding them can help you make informed decisions about your health. This guide explains what the evidence shows and what your prescriber recommends.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Alcohol Interactions: Mounjaro vs Wegovy Clinical Evidence

Both Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) can affect how your body processes alcohol, though the mechanisms differ slightly. Mounjaro is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, whilst Wegovy activates GLP-1 only — this difference means their side effect profiles vary, including how they interact with alcohol.

Key alcohol-related considerations:

  • Both medications slow gastric emptying, which can slow alcohol absorption and increase intoxication risk
  • Both can cause nausea and vomiting as common side effects — alcohol increases this risk significantly
  • Alcohol can lower blood sugar in people taking GLP-1 medication, raising hypoglycaemia risk if you also take diabetes medication
  • Dehydration from alcohol is more problematic on these medications, as they already affect fluid balance
  • Neither medication specifically prohibits alcohol, but both require cautious consumption

Clinical trial data from the SURMOUNT studies (Mounjaro) and STEP trials (Wegovy) did not specifically isolate alcohol's interaction, so prescriber guidance varies by region across the UK.

Individual Assessment and Prescriber Guidance

Whether you can safely drink alcohol on Mounjaro or Wegovy depends entirely on your individual health profile, which is why your prescriber must assess your personal situation. Your GP or the clinician issuing your UK prescription will consider your overall health, other medications, and any contraindications before giving you specific alcohol guidance.

What to discuss with your prescriber:

  • Your current drinking habits and frequency
  • Whether you take any diabetes medications (sulphonylureas or insulin especially)
  • Any history of pancreatitis or gallbladder problems
  • Your tolerance to nausea and digestive side effects

If you are prescribed either medication, ask your prescriber or pharmacist for specific alcohol guidance for your situation. Use our free GLP-1 weight loss calculator above to understand your treatment pathway — knowing your expected dose can help you prepare questions for your clinical assessment.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Can you drink alcohol while taking Mounjaro?

Mounjaro doesn't absolutely prohibit alcohol, but it does increase risks. Alcohol slows stomach emptying alongside Mounjaro itself, potentially increasing intoxication. Both cause nausea independently, so combined they're more problematic. Your prescriber will assess your individual safety based on your health history, other medications, and drinking habits. Always discuss alcohol consumption at your clinical assessment.

Is alcohol safer on Wegovy than Mounjaro?

Neither medication makes alcohol "safe," but mechanisms differ slightly. Wegovy is a single GLP-1 agonist, whilst Mounjaro is dual GIP+GLP-1, which means slightly different side effect profiles. Both slow stomach emptying and increase nausea risk with alcohol. Clinical trial data didn't directly compare alcohol safety between them. Your prescriber's advice depends on your individual circumstances, not just which medication you're taking.

What happens if you mix alcohol with GLP-1 medication?

Alcohol can slow stomach emptying further (both alcohol and GLP-1 do this independently), increase nausea and vomiting, and lower blood sugar — particularly risky if you also take diabetes medication. Dehydration is also more likely. These aren't assured, but the risks are real. Start with very small amounts if your prescriber permits, and monitor how you feel. Never drive or operate machinery if you feel unwell.

Do I need to avoid alcohol completely on Mounjaro or Wegovy?

Complete avoidance isn't universally required, but caution is essential. Some patients do drink alcohol whilst on these medications, often in small amounts and infrequently. This decision must be made with your prescriber after your clinical assessment. Factors like whether you take insulin, your nausea tolerance, and your overall health determine what's safe for you personally.

What should I tell my prescriber about drinking?

Be honest about how often you drink, typical amounts, and whether you have any history of alcohol-related health issues. Mention any diabetes medications you take — these interact with alcohol independently, and adding GLP-1 complicates things further. Ask your prescriber specifically what their guidance is for your situation, and whether small amounts are acceptable or if abstinence is safer for you.
