What Is a Good BMI for Men?
A good BMI for men in the UK falls between 18.5 and 24.9 according to NHS guidelines. This range is considered healthy weight for adult men of any height. Your BMI depends on both your weight and height — two measurements combined to give an overall health indicator. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal BMI instantly, then see where you fall within the NHS categories. Keep in mind that BMI is a screening tool, not a complete picture of health.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
NHS BMI Categories and Ranges for Men
The NHS BMI formula divides adults into five clear categories. For men, a healthy BMI range starts at 18.5 and extends to 24.9 — this is where health risks from excess weight are lowest. A BMI below 18.5 is classified as underweight. Between 25.0 and 29.9 is overweight, which means increased health risk but not yet in the obese category. From 30.0 onwards is obese, with further subdivisions: Class I (30–34.9), Class II (35–39.9), and Class III (40+, also called severely obese).
To calculate your BMI, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For example, a man weighing 80kg and 1.75m tall would have a BMI of 26.1, placing him in the overweight category. BMI Limitations and What Else Matters for Men's Health
BMI limitations are important to understand. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat — a muscular man may have a higher BMI while remaining very healthy. Athletes and men with high muscle mass may fall into the "overweight" or "obese" categories by BMI alone, yet have low body fat percentage and excellent cardiovascular health.
For this reason, the NHS recommends checking waist circumference alongside BMI. For men, a waist over 94cm (37 inches) indicates increased health risk; over 102cm (40 inches) indicates high risk, regardless of BMI. Consider also your family history, fitness level, blood pressure, and cholesterol — your GP can give you personalised health advice beyond BMI.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What's the difference between a good BMI and a healthy BMI for men?
"Good" and "healthy" BMI are the same thing in NHS terminology — both refer to the 18.5–24.9 range. This range indicates lowest risk of weight-related health problems. Some men below 18.5 (underweight) may also be healthy, depending on their overall health profile.
Is a BMI of 25 bad for men?
A BMI of 25 falls in the overweight category (25–29.9), which indicates increased health risk compared to the healthy range. However, it's not dangerous — it's a signal that lifestyle changes or medical support may help prevent further weight gain and reduce future health risks.
Can I have a good BMI but still be unhealthy?
Yes. BMI is just one screening tool. A man with a healthy BMI (18.5–24.9) could still have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, poor fitness, or other health issues. Conversely, some men slightly outside the healthy BMI range may be very healthy overall, especially if they have high muscle mass.
What's the average BMI for UK men?
According to recent data, the average UK adult man has a BMI of approximately 27.9, which falls in the overweight category. This reflects that many UK men weigh more than the healthy range, though individual circumstances vary widely.
How do I improve my BMI if it's above 25?
The NHS recommends a calorie deficit of around 500 kcal per day for sustainable weight loss of approximately 0.5kg per week. Combine dietary changes with increased physical activity.
