What Is a Healthy Weight Chart and How to Use It
A health weight chart is a simple tool that shows the healthy weight range for your height based on NHS guidelines. Rather than a single "ideal" weight, these charts display a range that's healthy for most adults. Your healthy weight depends on your height, age, sex, and muscle mass. Using our free BMI calculator above, you can instantly find where your current weight falls and what a healthy target might be for your individual circumstances.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
Understanding NHS Health Weight Ranges
The NHS uses Body Mass Index (BMI) as the primary measure to determine healthy weight ranges. A healthy BMI for most UK adults is between 18.5 and 24.9. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends a lower range of 18.5 to 22.9, as these groups face higher health risks at lower BMI levels.
Your healthy weight range can be calculated using your height. For example, an adult who is 5ft 8in (1.73m) tall would have a healthy weight range of approximately 55–75 kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs). However, BMI has limitations — it doesn't account for muscle mass, so athletes or very muscular individuals may fall outside "healthy" ranges despite being fit. Your GP can give you personalised weight management advice using this UK health information alongside other health markers.

How to Use the Weight Converter and BMI Tool
Finding your healthy weight is straightforward with our weight converter and BMI calculator. Simply enter your height and current weight, and you'll see your BMI category instantly. The calculator also shows your healthy weight range in both kg and stone — useful since many UK adults prefer stone measurements.
If your BMI falls outside the healthy range, you don't need to panic. A GP or registered dietitian can discuss a personalised plan. For those with a BMI of 30 or above (or 27–29.9 with weight-related health conditions), weight management support including lifestyle changes, dietary advice, or prescription options may be available through NHS services or private prescribing following clinical assessment.

How We Built These Tools
Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.
All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.
We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is the difference between BMI and a health weight chart?
A BMI calculator gives you a single number based on your height and weight. A health weight chart shows the entire healthy range for your height. BMI is a screening tool — it's useful but doesn't account for muscle, bone density, or where fat is stored. Charts show context, while BMI shows where you fall within NHS categories.
Is the healthy weight range the same for men and women?
The BMI categories are the same for men and women, but healthy weight ranges at the same height may differ slightly due to differences in average muscle mass. However, the NHS BMI thresholds (18.5–24.9) apply equally. Your GP can discuss what's healthy for your individual body composition.
What if I'm overweight according to the chart — should I try to lose weight?
If your BMI is in the overweight range (25–29.9), lifestyle changes like increased activity and balanced nutrition may help. Even losing 5–10% of your body weight can improve health markers. However, don't attempt gradual weight management without GP guidance. If you have weight-related health conditions, your GP can discuss options including specialist weight management services.
Can I use a health weight chart if I'm very muscular or athletic?
Health weight charts use BMI, which doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. If you're athletic with high muscle mass, BMI may overestimate your health risk. Your GP or a sports nutritionist can assess your actual body composition using waist circumference, fitness level, and health markers — not BMI alone.
Where can I find NHS guidance on healthy weight management?
The NHS website offers the Healthy Weight Hub with tools and personalised support. Your GP can refer you to tier 3 specialist weight management services if needed. You can also use our free BMI calculator and weight converter on this page to understand your healthy range based on current NHS thresholds.
