Healthy Weight Chart According to Your Height

Finding your healthy weight range based on your height is one of the most practical steps you can take for your health. In the UK, the NHS uses BMI (body mass index) combined with height to define healthy weight ranges for adults. Rather than a single "ideal" weight, there's actually a healthy range based on your height and individual factors. This guide explains how height affects healthy weight and gives you the tools to calculate your own personal range using NHS-aligned thresholds.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How Height Determines Your Healthy Weight Range

Your height is the foundation for calculating a healthy weight using BMI (body mass index). The NHS defines a healthy BMI as 18.5 to 24.9 for most adults. Because BMI accounts for both weight and height, taller people naturally have higher healthy weight ranges than shorter people.

Healthy weight range formula:

  • Lower bound: 18.5 × height (m)²
  • Upper bound: 24.9 × height (m)²

For example, an adult who is 5ft 8in (1.73m) tall has a healthy weight range of approximately 55 to 75kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs). Someone 5ft 4in (1.63m) tall would have a lower range of around 49 to 66kg (7st 10lbs to 10st 5lbs). UK Health Guidance and Tools for Weight Management

The NHS recommends that adults maintain a healthy weight as part of overall health maintenance. If you're outside your healthy range, losing or gaining weight at a sustainable rate of 0.5 to 1kg per week is recommended. Your GP can provide personalised health advice based on your individual circumstances, medical history, and any weight-related health conditions.

MyWeightCheck provides free UK health information tools including a weight converter to switch between stone, pounds, and kilograms, and a BMI calculator tailored to NHS guidance. For those exploring weight management options, our GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help you understand potential outcomes with prescription medication alongside lifestyle changes.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the healthy weight range for someone 5ft 10in tall?

At 5ft 10in (1.78m), a healthy weight range using NHS BMI guidelines is approximately 59 to 79kg (9st 4lbs to 12st 6lbs). Use our BMI calculator above to enter your exact height and get your personal range instantly.

Does healthy weight vary by age or gender?

BMI categories are the same for men and women above 18 years old. However, your GP may consider additional factors like muscle mass, medical history, and ethnicity when assessing your personal healthy weight. For people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage, the NHS recommends slightly lower BMI thresholds.

How do I calculate my healthy weight range from my height?

Multiply your height in metres by itself, then multiply by 18.5 (lower bound) and 24.9 (upper bound). For example, at 1.70m: 1.70² × 18.5 = 53.5kg and 1.70² × 24.9 = 71.9kg. The weight converter on this page makes this calculation instantly.

What if I'm outside the healthy weight range for my height?

If you're consistently outside the healthy range, speaking with your GP is a good first step. They can assess your individual health, discuss any underlying factors, and suggest appropriate support—whether lifestyle changes, NHS weight management programmes, or other options.

Is BMI the only measure of healthy weight?

BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, and waist circumference also matters for health. The NHS recommends considering both BMI and waist measurement together for a fuller picture of health risk.
