Healthy Weight for Men by Height

A healthy weight depends on your height, not just a number on the scales. In the UK, we use BMI (body mass index) to determine if a weight is healthy for your height. This guide shows typical healthy weight ranges for men across common heights, using NHS guidance. Your GP can provide personalised advice, but understanding where you fall on a weight height chart helps you grasp your current health context and set realistic goals.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges for Men by Height

According to NHS health guidance, a healthy BMI for most adults is between 18.5 and 24.9. This translates to different weight ranges depending on your height. Below is a weight height chart showing healthy weight ranges for men at various heights, expressed in both kilograms and stone:

  • 5ft 6in (168cm): 54–72 kg (8st 6lbs–11st 5lbs)
  • 5ft 8in (173cm): 56–76 kg (8st 11lbs–11st 13lbs)
  • 5ft 10in (178cm): 59–79 kg (9st 4lbs–12st 6lbs)
  • 5ft 11in (180cm): 60–81 kg (9st 6lbs–12st 11lbs)
  • 6ft 0in (183cm): 61–83 kg (9st 9lbs–13st 1lb)
  • 6ft 2in (188cm): 64–87 kg (10st 1lb–13st 10lbs)

What About Overweight and Obese Ranges?

Not all men fall into the healthy weight category, and understanding the full spectrum helps with weight management. A BMI of 25–29.9 is classified as overweight, and 30 and above is obese according to NHS guidance. For example, a man who is 5ft 10in and weighs 90 kg (14st 2lbs) would have a BMI of approximately 29, placing him in the overweight range. If weight management is a concern, your GP can discuss options including lifestyle changes, dietary support, or—in some cases—prescription interventions. Remember that muscle weighs more than fat, so athletes may have a higher BMI without excess body fat.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the average weight for a UK man?

According to ONS data, the average UK adult man weighs approximately 85.7 kg (13st 7lbs) and stands around 175.3 cm (5ft 9in) tall. The average BMI is approximately 27.9, which falls into the overweight category. Individual healthy weight varies based on frame size, muscle mass, and personal health factors.

How do I use a weight height chart?

Find your height on the left, then look across to find weight ranges in kg or stone. Your current weight falling in the healthy (green) zone suggests a BMI in the 18.5–24.9 range. If you fall outside, your GP can advise on next steps. Use our BMI calculator above for your exact personal BMI.

Is BMI the only measure of healthy weight?

BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations—it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. Waist circumference is also important: men with waist over 94cm face increased health risk, over 102cm high risk. For a complete picture, discuss your weight with your GP rather than relying solely on a chart.

Can I achieve a healthy weight through diet and exercise alone?

Yes, most men can reach a healthy weight through sustainable dietary changes and increased physical activity. The NHS recommends losing 0.5–1 kg per week for sustainable results. If you're struggling, your GP can refer you to specialist weight management services or discuss other evidence-based options.

What if I'm struggling with weight management?

Start by discussing weight concerns with your GP. They can assess your health, rule out underlying conditions, and refer you to NHS Tier 3 weight management services if appropriate. Your GP can also discuss prescription weight loss options, lifestyle programmes, and ongoing support tailored to your situation. ```
