Healthy Weight Graph — What's Right for Your Height?

A healthy weight graph shows the ideal body weight range for different heights according to NHS guidelines. Your healthy weight depends on your height, age, muscle mass, and overall health — not just a single number. In the UK, we typically use stone and pounds alongside kilograms. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your healthy weight range instantly, and understand how your current weight compares to NHS recommendations for your height.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

NHS Healthy Weight Ranges by Height

The NHS healthy weight range is based on a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m². For people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends a slightly lower range (18.5 to 22.9) due to higher health risks at the same BMI level.

  • At 5ft 4in (163cm): healthy weight range is 7st 7lbs to 10st 3lbs (48–65kg)
  • At 5ft 6in (168cm): healthy weight range is 7st 13lbs to 11st 1lb (50–70kg)
  • At 5ft 8in (173cm): healthy weight range is 8st 6lbs to 11st 8lbs (54–74kg)
  • At 5ft 10in (178cm): healthy weight range is 8st 13lbs to 12st 4lbs (57–78kg)
  • At 6ft 0in (183cm): healthy weight range is 9st 7lbs to 13st 2lbs (61–83kg)

These ranges assume typical body composition. Use our weight converter to switch between metric and imperial measurements, or calculate your personal BMI range using the calculator on this page.

Factors Affecting Your Ideal Body Weight

Your ideal weight is not one fixed number — it varies based on several factors. Muscle mass weighs more than fat, so athletic or muscular individuals may have a higher healthy weight. Frame size (bone structure) also matters: larger-framed people naturally weigh more. Age affects muscle and bone density — weight recommendations may shift as you age. Ethnicity influences health risk at different BMI levels, which is why the NHS uses adjusted thresholds for certain groups. Gender and hormonal factors play a role in natural weight distribution.

Rather than targeting a specific weight, focus on maintaining a BMI within the healthy range for your height and ethnicity. A GP can give personalised advice on what a healthy weight means for your individual circumstances.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What does a healthy weight graph actually show?

A healthy weight graph displays the BMI-based healthy weight range for each height. It shows the lower and upper bounds of the healthy weight zone (BMI 18.5–24.9) in both kilograms and stone/pounds. Most graphs also mark the overweight and obese thresholds so you can see where your weight sits relative to NHS recommendations.

Is there a single "ideal weight" for my height?

No. Healthy weight is a range, not a single number, because muscle mass, bone density, frame size, and age all affect what's healthy for you. Two people of the same height and weight can have very different body compositions. Use our BMI calculator to find your personal healthy weight range for your height.

How does average UK weight compare to healthy weight?

The average UK adult weighs around 13st 7lbs (85.7kg) for men and 11st 3lbs (71.6kg) for women. However, average weight is not the same as healthy weight — most UK adults are overweight or obese (BMI above 25). Your healthy weight range depends on your height, not on what others weigh.

Does healthy weight differ by ethnicity?

Yes. The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean heritage because these groups face higher health risks at the same BMI level. If you belong to one of these groups, ask your GP about adjusted healthy weight ranges for you.

How do I calculate my healthy weight range for my height?

Use our free BMI calculator on this page — enter your height and it will show your healthy weight range instantly in both kilograms and stone/pounds. Alternatively, multiply your height in metres squared by 18.5 (lower bound) and 24.9 (upper bound) to calculate the range yourself.
