Height and Weight Chart For Men

A height and weight chart for men provides a quick reference for what constitutes a healthy weight across different heights. In the UK, we use stone and kilograms to measure body weight, and the NHS uses BMI (body mass index) as the primary screening tool for healthy weight ranges. This guide shows you where your weight sits relative to NHS health guidelines, helping you understand whether you're in a healthy range for your height. Remember that weight alone doesn't tell the whole story — factors like muscle mass, age, and overall fitness also matter for your health.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges For Men By Height

The NHS defines a healthy BMI as between 18.5 and 24.9, which translates to specific weight ranges depending on your height. For men of average UK height (5ft 9in / 175cm), a healthy weight is approximately 65–82kg (10st 3lbs to 12st 12lbs). At 5ft 6in (168cm), the healthy range is roughly 56–71kg (8st 12lbs to 11st 2lbs), while at 6ft (183cm), it's around 75–95kg (11st 11lbs to 14st 13lbs).

These ranges assume standard body composition. Our free BMI calculator above lets you enter your exact height and weight to find your personal BMI instantly. Remember that BMI has limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes or very muscular men may have a higher BMI but still be in excellent health. For additional context, you can also use our free weight converter to check your weight in different units (kg, stone, or pounds).

Using Weight Charts For Health Management

A height and weight chart is useful as a starting point for understanding your health profile, but it shouldn't be your only health metric. The NHS recommends combining weight assessment with other measurements, including waist circumference (a key indicator of abdominal fat and cardiovascular risk). For men, a waist measurement above 94cm (37in) indicates increased health risk, and above 102cm (40in) indicates high risk.

If your weight falls outside the healthy range, sustainable weight loss is typically achieved at a rate of 0.5–1kg per week through a combination of balanced nutrition and regular physical activity. Your GP can provide personalised advice based on your individual health profile. If you're tracking progress, our free progress tracker can help you log weight changes over time and stay motivated.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the healthy weight for a 5ft 10in man?

For a man who is 5ft 10in (178cm) tall, the healthy weight range is approximately 68–86kg (10st 10lbs to 13st 8lbs), based on a BMI of 18.5–24.9. This assumes average body composition. Use our BMI calculator to check your exact BMI — it accounts for your precise height and weight measurements.

Is there a difference between overweight and obese according to the chart?

Yes. According to NHS guidelines, overweight is a BMI of 25.0–29.9, while obese is 30.0 or above. A man at 5ft 9in (175cm) would be overweight at around 75–82kg (11st 11lbs to 12st 12lbs) and obese above 82kg. Weight charts help identify which category applies to your height.

Can muscle mass affect height and weight charts?

Yes, significantly. Weight charts are based on BMI, which doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. A muscular man may have a higher BMI but lower body fat percentage than the chart suggests. For a more complete picture, consider waist circumference and overall fitness alongside the chart.

What should I do if my weight is above the healthy range?

Consult your GP for personalised advice. The NHS recommends losing weight gradually at 0.5–1kg per week through a calorie deficit and increased physical activity. Our progress tracker can help you monitor changes. Weight management strategies vary by individual health profile and medical history.

Are weight charts different for men of different ethnicities?

The standard NHS BMI categories apply to all men. However, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for men of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage due to higher cardiovascular and diabetes risk at the same BMI. Discuss your personal thresholds with your GP.
