What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Understanding Your Healthy Weight Range
Your healthy weight range depends on several factors beyond just height: age, muscle mass, bone density, and ethnicity all play a role. BMI is a useful screening tool, but it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat — an athletic man with significant muscle may have a higher BMI but be in excellent health. The NHS recommends that healthy weight is part of overall health, alongside regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and good sleep. If you're concerned about your weight or have underlying health conditions, your GP can provide personalised advice based on your individual circumstances and health history.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is considered a healthy weight for a man 5ft 10in tall?
According to NHS BMI guidelines, a healthy weight range for a man who is 5ft 10in (178cm) is approximately 10st 3lbs to 13st 8lbs (65–87kg or 143–192lbs). This corresponds to a BMI of 18.5–24.9. Use our free BMI calculator to find your exact BMI at your current weight.
How do I calculate if I'm within a healthy weight range?
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For example, if you weigh 80kg and are 1.78m tall: 80 ÷ (1.78 × 1.78) = BMI of 25.3. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is healthy according to NHS guidance. Our BMI calculator does this instantly.
Is BMI the only measure of a healthy weight?
No. BMI is useful but has limitations — it doesn't account for muscle mass or where fat is stored. The NHS also recommends measuring waist circumference: under 94cm (37in) for men is healthy, 94–102cm (37–40in) indicates increased risk, and over 102cm (40in) indicates high risk.
Does age affect what a healthy weight should be?
BMI categories are the same for adult men regardless of age, but muscle naturally decreases with age. An older man may have the same BMI as a younger man but different body composition. Your GP can assess what healthy weight means for your specific age and health profile.
Can I use this chart if I'm of South Asian or Black African heritage?
NHS guidance recommends lower BMI thresholds for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults — healthy BMI for these groups starts at 18.5–22.9 rather than 18.5–24.9. This is because these groups face higher health risks at lower BMI levels. Your GP can provide personalised advice.
