Height vs Weight Chart — UK Health Context
A height vs weight chart shows the healthy weight range for different heights according to NHS guidelines. In the UK, we use stone and pounds alongside kilograms for body weight. Your ideal weight depends on your height, age, sex, and body composition. Rather than a single target weight, the NHS recommends aiming for a healthy BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9 for most adults. This guide explains how height and weight relate, what the NHS considers healthy, and how to find your personal healthy weight range.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
NHS Height and Weight Ranges for UK Adults
The NHS provides healthy weight guidance based on height rather than fixed target weights. For example, a healthy weight for someone 5ft 8in (173cm) tall ranges from approximately 55kg to 74kg (8st 9lbs to 11st 9lbs). For someone 5ft 4in (163cm), the healthy range is roughly 47kg to 63kg (7st 5lbs to 9st 12lbs).
These ranges are calculated using the BMI formula: weight (kg) ÷ height (metres)². A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for most adults. However, adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage should aim for a lower range: BMI 18.5 to 22.9, as these populations face higher health risks at standard thresholds.
- BMI 18.5–24.9: Healthy weight for most UK adults
- BMI 23.0–27.4: Healthy for South Asian and Chinese adults (lower thresholds apply)
- BMI 25–29.9: Overweight category
- BMI 30+: Obese category

Why Height Matters More Than Weight Alone
Weight alone tells only half the story. Two people weighing the same amount can have very different health outcomes depending on their height, muscle mass, and where their weight is distributed. This is why the NHS uses height-adjusted measurements like BMI rather than fixed weight targets. A weight that is healthy for someone 6ft tall may be overweight or underweight for someone 5ft 4in.
Your waist circumference is equally important. The NHS recommends:
- Men: Waist under 94cm (37in) is healthy
- Women: Waist under 80cm (31.5in) is healthy

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is the healthy weight range for my height?
Healthy weight depends on your height and BMI. Use the free BMI calculator on this page to find your personal range instantly. The NHS defines healthy BMI as 18.5–24.9 for most adults. For a 5ft 8in person, healthy weight is roughly 55–74kg (8st 9lbs to 11st 9lbs). Your GP can give personalised advice for your height and health situation.
Is there an ideal weight chart for UK adults?
Rather than a single ideal weight, the NHS recommends a healthy weight range based on your height and BMI. Our free weight converter helps you switch between kg, stone, and pounds. BMI calculators account for your specific height. Individual factors like muscle mass, age, and ethnicity affect ideal weight, so your GP is the best source for personalised guidance.
How do I convert my height and weight between metric and imperial?
The UK uses both systems. Height: 1cm ≈ 0.39 inches; weight: 1kg ≈ 2.2lbs or 0.157 stone. Our free weight converter above instantly converts between kg, stone, and pounds. For height, use the converter to switch between centimetres and feet/inches for NHS health charts.
Do men and women have different healthy weight ranges?
Men and women with the same height and BMI have the same healthy weight range according to NHS BMI guidelines. However, recommended body fat percentages differ slightly by sex, and hormonal factors affect weight distribution. Individual factors matter more than sex alone. Your GP can discuss what healthy weight means for your personal health.
How often should I check my weight against height charts?
The NHS recommends monitoring weight regularly but not obsessively—weekly or monthly checks are typical. Use our free progress tracker to log your weight over time and identify trends. Small fluctuations (1–2kg) are normal. Focus on sustainable lifestyle changes rather than hitting a specific number. If you're concerned about your weight, speak with your GP.
