What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
How BMI is Calculated and What the Categories Mean
BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated using a simple formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The NHS uses standardised BMI categories to indicate health risk levels:
- Underweight: BMI below 18.5 — may indicate insufficient weight or muscle loss
- Healthy weight: BMI 18.5–24.9 — associated with lowest health risk for most adults
- Overweight: BMI 25.0–29.9 — increased risk of weight-related health conditions
- Obese (Class I): BMI 30.0–34.9 — significantly elevated health risks
- Obese (Class II): BMI 35.0–39.9 — high health risks including diabetes and heart disease
- Severely obese (Class III): BMI 40.0+ — very high health risks requiring medical support
For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends using a lower healthy BMI range of 18.5–22.9, as these groups face higher diabetes and cardiovascular risk at standard BMI thresholds. Our free weight converter helps you switch between kg, stone, and pounds to find your exact measurements on any BMI table.

Why BMI Tables Have Important Limitations
While height weight BMI tables are useful screening tools, they have significant limitations you should understand. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat — a muscular athlete may have a high BMI but low body fat percentage. It also ignores where fat is stored; excess fat around the stomach carries greater health risk than fat on hips or thighs, regardless of BMI number. BMI is less accurate for elderly people (who naturally lose muscle), during pregnancy, or for people with certain medical conditions.
For this reason, your GP may also measure your waist circumference: men over 94cm (37 inches) have increased risk, and women over 80cm (31.5 inches) have increased risk. Combine BMI information with waist measurement and your GP's clinical judgment for a complete health picture. Use our free BMI calculator with this context in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is a healthy BMI range for UK adults?
According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 for most adults. For people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends a lower range of 18.5 to 22.9 because these populations have higher health risks at standard BMI thresholds. Your GP can advise on your personal healthy range.
How do I use a height weight BMI table?
Find your height in the left column and your weight in the top row (in kg, stone, or lbs). Where they intersect shows your approximate BMI and category. However, for your exact BMI, use our free BMI calculator on this page — it's more precise than reading from a table.
Is BMI the only measure of healthy weight?
No. BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. Waist circumference is also important — the NHS recommends measuring around your natural waist. Muscle mass, age, and ethnicity all affect what a healthy weight means for you personally. Your GP can assess your individual health risk.
Why do people of South Asian background have different BMI thresholds?
Research shows South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean populations have higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease at lower BMI levels than white European populations. The NHS therefore recommends lower BMI thresholds for these groups to identify health risk earlier.
Can I use a BMI table if I'm very tall or very short?
BMI tables work for adults between roughly 150cm and 190cm tall. If you're outside this range, use our free BMI calculator instead — it handles any height accurately. BMI is not appropriate for children; use NHS growth charts for children instead.
