What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How to Use Your Height and Weight to Calculate Health Range

Your healthy weight range depends entirely on your height. The NHS uses BMI (Body Mass Index) to determine whether a weight is healthy for a given height. For most UK adults, a healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9. Using your height and weight together, you can calculate where you sit on the health spectrum.

For example, at 5ft 8in (173cm), the healthy weight range is approximately 55–74kg (8st 8lbs to 11st 9lbs). At 5ft 4in (163cm), the healthy range is roughly 48–64kg (7st 7lbs to 10st 1lbs). Our free BMI calculator above instantly calculates your personal healthy weight range using your exact measurements. You can also use our weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and pounds to see your numbers in your preferred units.

For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends slightly lower thresholds due to increased health risks at the same BMI levels.

Why Height and Weight Matter Together

Height and weight are only meaningful when considered together. Two people weighing the same may have very different health statuses if they have different heights. This is why BMI combines both measurements into a single health indicator.

A healthy weight at one height might be overweight at a shorter height, and underweight at a taller height. This is why height weight calculators are essential for personalised health assessment. Beyond BMI, your waist circumference also matters—the NHS recommends keeping waist measurement below 94cm (37 inches) for men and 80cm (31.5 inches) for women to reduce cardiovascular risk.

If you're interested in weight management support, our GLP-1 weight loss calculator can estimate potential outcomes if you're considering prescription weight loss options alongside lifestyle changes.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the healthy weight for my height?

Your healthy weight range depends on your exact height. Use the BMI calculator above with your height and weight to get your personal healthy range. As a guide, a BMI of 18.5–24.9 is healthy for most adults. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults, a BMI of 18.5–22.9 is recommended. Your GP can also advise on your ideal weight range.

How do I calculate healthy weight from height?

Multiply your height in metres by itself, then divide your weight in kg by that number to get your BMI. For example: at 1.73m tall, a healthy weight range is roughly 55–74kg. The easiest method is to use our free BMI calculator above—it does the maths instantly for you.

Is BMI the only way to measure if my weight is healthy?

BMI is useful but has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may have a high BMI but be healthy. Waist measurement is equally important—excess belly fat carries higher health risks. Your GP can provide a complete health assessment beyond just height and weight.

What if I'm overweight for my height—what should I do?

If your BMI is 25–29.9 (overweight) or higher, discuss with your GP. Small changes like increased activity and balanced nutrition help. For those with a BMI of 30+ or 27+ with health conditions, your GP may discuss weight management options including lifestyle support or, in some cases, prescription medication.

How accurate is a height weight calculator?

Height weight calculators using BMI are accurate screening tools but don't account for muscle mass, bone density, age, or fat distribution. They're most useful for general health screening. Always discuss your personal health with your GP for tailored advice specific to your circumstances and medical history.
