Height Weight Calculator for UK Adults

A height weight calculator helps you understand what a healthy weight range is for your individual height using NHS guidelines. In the UK, we use different measurements — stone, pounds, and kilograms — and our BMI thresholds vary if you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage. Rather than aiming for a single "ideal" weight, NHS guidance focuses on maintaining a healthy BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. This page explains how height and weight relate to health, how to calculate your personal healthy weight range, and where to find free tools to support your weight management journey.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How Height and Weight Affect Your Health

Your height and weight together determine your BMI (Body Mass Index), which is a screening tool used by the NHS to assess whether you're at a healthy weight. BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. While BMI has limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, for example — it remains the primary health metric used across the UK and NHS services.

For a given height, there is a healthy weight range rather than a single target. For example, someone 5ft 8in (173cm) tall has a healthy weight range of approximately 55kg to 74kg (8st 8lbs to 11st 8lbs) according to NHS guidelines. Maintaining a weight within this range reduces your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers. Waist measurement is also important — excess weight around the middle carries particular health risks regardless of overall BMI.

It's worth noting that ethnicity affects your risk profile. The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage because these groups face higher cardiovascular and metabolic risks at lower BMI levels. A prescriber or GP can advise you on what's healthy for your individual background.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is a healthy weight for my height in the UK?

A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 according to NHS guidelines. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults, the healthy range starts at 18.5 and ends at 22.9. Use the free BMI calculator on this page to find your healthy weight range based on your specific height — it will show you the minimum and maximum healthy weights in stone, pounds, and kilograms.

How is healthy weight calculated?

Healthy weight ranges are calculated using BMI (Body Mass Index). The formula is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The NHS provides safe BMI ranges for different ages and ethnic backgrounds. Rather than one "ideal" weight, you have a healthy range — for example, a 5ft 8in adult might have a healthy range of 55–74kg. Individual factors like muscle mass, frame size, and fitness level also matter.

Does height weight matter more than BMI?

BMI combines both height and weight, so they're equally important — neither matters independently. However, BMI has limitations. Two people with the same BMI can have very different body compositions depending on muscle mass. Waist circumference is also important; excess weight around the middle carries particular health risks. Your GP can assess your overall health picture beyond just height and weight.

Is there a height weight chart for the UK?

The NHS doesn't publish a single "height weight chart" because healthy weight varies by individual factors including age, sex, ethnicity, and muscle mass. Instead, the NHS uses BMI ranges. You can calculate your personal healthy weight range using our free BMI calculator on this page, which shows recommended weights for your exact height in UK measurements.

Should I aim for a specific weight or a weight range?

The NHS recommends aiming for a healthy weight range rather than a single number. This is more sustainable and accounts for natural daily fluctuations. Most people benefit from staying somewhere within their healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) rather than targeting one exact figure. Using our free progress tracker can help you monitor trends over weeks and months rather than obsessing over daily numbers.
