Height Weight Chart As Per Age — UK Health Information

A healthy weight depends on your height, age, and individual health factors — not just a single number. In the UK, the NHS uses BMI (Body Mass Index) as the primary screening tool to determine if weight falls within a healthy range for your height. This guide explains how age, height, and weight interact, and provides context for understanding what a healthy weight means for you personally. Age itself doesn't change BMI thresholds, but it may affect how your body composition changes and how weight relates to overall health.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How Height, Weight, and Age Relate to Health

Your healthy weight range is determined primarily by your height and BMI, not your age. The NHS BMI categories (healthy weight 18.5–24.9) apply to all adults regardless of age. However, age affects how weight is distributed and how it impacts health. Younger adults and older adults may experience different health outcomes at the same BMI due to differences in muscle mass and metabolism.

To find your healthy weight range for your height, use our free BMI calculator above — it instantly shows where you fall on the NHS scale. For example, at 1.70m (5ft 7in), a healthy weight is approximately 53–72 kg (8st 5lbs to 11st 4lbs). At 1.80m (5ft 11in), healthy weight ranges from 60–81 kg (9st 6lbs to 12st 11lbs).

  • Healthy BMI (18.5–24.9): Associated with lowest health risk
  • Overweight (25.0–29.9): Increased risk of weight-related conditions
  • Obese (30+): Significantly higher health risks

Age and Body Composition — What Changes

Age does affect body composition — the proportion of muscle, bone, and fat in your body. Muscle mass naturally declines with age (sarcopenia), meaning older adults may have higher body fat at the same weight. This is why maintaining physical activity becomes increasingly important in middle and later age. However, BMI thresholds remain the same across all adult ages in NHS guidance.

If you're concerned about whether your weight is healthy for your specific age and circumstances, your GP can assess your individual health risk factors. Use our free weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and lbs, and our BMI calculator to check your personal category instantly.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Does age change what a healthy weight is?

No. The NHS BMI thresholds (18.5–24.9 for healthy weight) apply to all adults regardless of age. However, age affects body composition — muscle mass declines with age, so older adults may have higher body fat at the same weight. For personalised advice, consult your GP.

What is the healthy weight range for a 1.75m tall adult?

At 1.75m (5ft 9in), a healthy BMI (18.5–24.9) corresponds to a weight of approximately 56–76 kg (8st 12lbs to 11st 13lbs). Use our BMI calculator above to check your specific height and weight.

Does metabolism slow down with age and affect weight management?

Yes, metabolism does slow slightly with age, and muscle loss reduces daily calorie burn. However, weight management still relies on creating a calorie deficit through diet and physical activity. Your GP or a dietitian can provide age-specific guidance.

How can I tell if my weight is healthy for my age?

Calculate your BMI using your height and weight — our free tool on this page does this instantly. Compare your result to NHS categories. If you have health concerns, your GP can assess your individual risk factors beyond BMI alone.

What's the difference between healthy weight and ideal weight?

Healthy weight is a BMI range associated with lower health risk. Ideal weight is individual and depends on factors like muscle mass, frame size, and personal health goals. Both concepts use BMI as a starting point — consult your GP for personalised guidance.
