What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
How to Convert Height and Weight Measurements
Weight conversions follow these simple formulas: 1 kilogram equals 2.20462 pounds, and 1 stone equals 14 pounds exactly (or 6.35029 kg). To convert kg to stone, divide your weight in kilograms by 6.35029. For example, 70kg ÷ 6.35029 = 11 stone (with the remainder converted to pounds). Height conversions are equally straightforward: 1 centimetre equals 0.3937 inches, or multiply centimetres by 0.3937 to get inches. A height of 173cm, for example, equals 5 feet 8 inches.
Use our free weight converter above to instantly switch between kg, stone, and pounds without doing the maths yourself. Once you've converted your measurements, you can calculate your BMI using the free BMI calculator on this page to see where your weight falls according to NHS health categories.

Understanding Your Weight in UK Health Context
After converting your height and weight, the next step is understanding what these measurements mean for your health. The NHS provides clear weight categories based on BMI (body mass index), which uses both your height and weight together. A healthy BMI for most UK adults is between 18.5 and 24.9, though lower thresholds apply if you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage. A modest weight loss of just 5–10% of your body weight can improve blood pressure, reduce type 2 diabetes risk, and enhance overall wellbeing. If you're considering weight management options or want to track progress toward a healthier weight, our free progress tracker helps you log changes over time and stay motivated.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
How do I convert my height and weight to different measurements?
Use our free height weight converter above to instantly convert between kg, stone, pounds, centimetres, feet, and inches. Simply enter your current measurements and the tool shows equivalents in all common UK and metric units. This is much faster than calculating by hand.
What is a healthy weight for my height according to NHS guidance?
Your healthy weight range depends on your height and is measured using BMI. Use the free BMI calculator on this page to find your personal healthy weight range. For most UK adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is healthy. Your GP can also advise on what's healthy for you individually.
Why do UK measurements use stone and pounds instead of kilograms?
Stone and pounds are traditional imperial measurements used in the UK and are still widely preferred by UK adults for body weight. Most UK clothing sizes, diet programmes, and health conversations use stone. However, the NHS uses kilograms for clinical records, which is why having both conversions readily available is helpful.
How does height and weight relate to BMI and health risk?
BMI is calculated using height and weight together to estimate whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. A higher BMI can indicate increased health risks, but BMI has limitations — it doesn't account for muscle mass or where fat is stored. Your GP can assess your overall health, not just BMI.
Can I use a height weight converter to check if I need weight management treatment?
A converter helps you understand your measurements, but to determine if you're eligible for weight management support, speak to your GP. They'll consider your BMI, any weight-related health conditions, and overall health history to advise whether intervention is appropriate for you.
