What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
Key Weight and BMI Calculation Formulas
BMI calculation: The formula is weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For example, if you weigh 70kg and are 1.75m tall, your BMI would be 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9, which falls in the healthy weight range according to NHS guidance.
Converting kg to stone: Divide your weight in kg by 6.35029. So 70kg ÷ 6.35 = 11 stone. To also show pounds, multiply the decimal by 14: 70kg = 11 stone and 0.1 pounds.
Converting kg to lbs: Multiply your weight in kg by 2.20462. So 70kg × 2.20462 = 154.3 lbs. Use our free weight converter above to switch between metric and imperial measurements instantly.
Healthy weight range: Calculate this by multiplying height (m)² by 18.5 (lower) and 24.9 (upper). At 1.75m, the healthy range is 56.6kg to 76.3kg (8st 13lbs to 12st).

UK Health Guidance and BMI Categories
According to NHS guidance, BMI categories in the UK are: underweight (below 18.5), healthy weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25.0–29.9), and obese (30.0 and above). However, adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage face higher health risks at lower BMI levels, so the NHS recommends lower thresholds: healthy weight 18.5–22.9, overweight 23.0–27.4, and obese 27.5 and above.
Remember that BMI is a screening tool but has limitations—it doesn't account for muscle mass or where fat is stored. Try our free BMI calculator on this page to check your personal BMI instantly, and speak to your GP about what your result means for your individual health.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
How do I calculate my BMI in the UK?
Use the formula: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For example, 70kg ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = BMI of 22.9. According to NHS guidance, this falls in the healthy weight range. Use our free BMI calculator above for gradual improvement.
How do I convert kilograms to stone?
Divide your weight in kg by 6.35029. So 70kg ÷ 6.35 = 11 stone. To also show pounds, multiply the decimal portion by 14. Our weight converter above does this instantly for any weight.
What is a healthy weight range according to NHS guidance?
The healthy BMI range is 18.5–24.9. Calculate your range by multiplying height (m)² by 18.5 (lower) and 24.9 (upper). For example, at 1.75m tall, the healthy range is 56.6kg to 76.3kg. Your GP can discuss what's healthy for you individually.
Are BMI calculations the same for all ethnic backgrounds in the UK?
No. The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults because these groups have higher health risks at lower BMI levels. Healthy weight for these groups is BMI 18.5–22.9 rather than 18.5–24.9.
What are the limitations of BMI calculation?
BMI doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or where fat is stored on your body. Athletes may have high BMI despite low body fat. Waist measurement and overall health context matter too. Always discuss your results with your GP for personalised health advice.
