How Much Should I Weigh? Find Your Healthy Weight Range

Your healthy weight depends on your height, age, sex, and body composition — not a single target number. According to NHS guidelines, a healthy weight corresponds to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. This page explains how to find your healthy weight range for your height and why individual factors matter when determining what weight is right for you.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges by Height (UK Measurements)

Your healthy weight range is calculated using your height and your BMI. The NHS recommends a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for most adults. For people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends a slightly lower healthy weight range — BMI 18.5 to 22.9 — due to increased health risks at higher BMI levels.

Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal healthy weight range instantly. Here are healthy weight ranges for common UK heights:

  • 5ft 0in (152cm): 47–63 kg (7st 5lbs – 9st 13lbs)
  • 5ft 2in (157cm): 50–67 kg (7st 12lbs – 10st 7lbs)
  • 5ft 4in (163cm): 52–72 kg (8st 3lbs – 11st 5lbs)
  • 5ft 6in (168cm): 55–76 kg (8st 9lbs – 11st 13lbs)
  • 5ft 8in (173cm): 58–81 kg (9st 1lb – 12st 10lbs)
  • 5ft 10in (178cm): 61–86 kg (9st 8lbs – 13st 8lbs)
  • 6ft 0in (183cm): 65–91 kg (10st 3lbs – 14st 5lbs)

Remember: these are ranges, not exact targets. Individual results vary, and your ideal weight within this range depends on your personal factors.

Factors That Affect Your Healthy Weight

Your ideal weight isn't just about BMI. Muscle mass weighs more than fat, so athletes and very fit people may have a higher weight within or above the healthy BMI range. Age affects metabolism and body composition — muscle naturally decreases with age. Bone frame size varies — a larger frame supports more weight healthily than a smaller frame. Ethnicity affects health risk at the same weight, which is why the NHS provides different thresholds for South Asian and Black African populations.

Rather than focusing on a single number, aim for the healthy weight range for your height using the weight for height calculator above. Your GP can give you personalised guidance based on your individual health, medical history, and body composition.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the most accurate way to calculate my healthy weight?

The most accurate method uses your height and BMI. Use our free BMI calculator above — it calculates your healthy weight range based on your height instantly. A healthy BMI is 18.5–24.9 for most adults (18.5–22.9 for South Asian and some Black populations). Your GP can also assess your healthy weight based on your individual health.

Is there a big difference between my healthy weight and ideal weight?

Yes. Your healthy weight range (based on BMI) is usually quite broad — typically 15–20kg difference between the lower and upper limits for a given height. Your ideal weight within that range depends on factors like muscle mass, frame size, and personal preference. Both are healthy targets; choose the one that feels sustainable for you.

How do I know if I'm in a healthy weight range?

Calculate your BMI using the free BMI calculator on this page. If your BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9, you're in the healthy weight range according to NHS guidelines (18.5–22.9 for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults). However, BMI doesn't account for muscle — ask your GP if you have concerns.

What if my current weight is above the healthy range?

The NHS recommends losing weight at a rate of 0.5–1 kg per week for sustainable results. Even losing 5–10% of your body weight can improve health outcomes. Our free progress tracker can help you log your journey. Talk to your GP about whether weight loss is right for you and what support is available.

Does healthy weight change as I get older?

Healthy BMI categories (18.5–24.9) remain the same across ages. However, as you age, metabolism may slow and muscle naturally decreases. Your GP may adjust weight recommendations based on your individual health, fitness level, and medical conditions. Regular check-ups help ensure your weight supports your overall health.
