How Much Should I Weigh in the UK?
Your healthy weight depends primarily on your height, not a single number that applies to everyone. According to NHS guidelines, a healthy weight for most UK adults falls within a BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9. However, the actual weight that's healthy for you varies based on individual factors including your muscle mass, bone density, frame size, and ethnicity. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal healthy weight range, or read on for practical guidance tailored to UK measurements.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
Healthy Weight Range by Height (UK Measurements)
The table below shows the healthy weight range for each height according to NHS BMI guidelines (BMI 18.5–24.9). These ranges apply to most UK adults, though ethnicity-adjusted thresholds may apply for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults.
- 150cm (4ft 11in): 41–56 kg (6st 6lbs–8st 12lbs)
- 155cm (5ft 1in): 44–61 kg (6st 13lbs–9st 8lbs)
- 160cm (5ft 3in): 47–67 kg (7st 6lbs–10st 8lbs)
- 165cm (5ft 5in): 50–73 kg (7st 12lbs–11st 7lbs)
- 170cm (5ft 7in): 53–79 kg (8st 5lbs–12st 6lbs)
- 173cm (5ft 8in): 55–84 kg (8st 9lbs–13st 3lbs)
- 175cm (5ft 9in): 57–87 kg (8st 13lbs–13st 10lbs)
- 180cm (5ft 11in): 60–94 kg (9st 6lbs–14st 10lbs)
- 185cm (6ft 1in): 63–101 kg (9st 13lbs–15st 12lbs)
- 190cm (6ft 3in): 67–109 kg (10st 7lbs–17st 2lbs)

Factors That Affect Your Ideal Weight
Your ideal weight isn't just determined by your height. Muscle mass weighs more than fat, so athletes and very fit individuals may have a higher healthy weight than someone the same height with less muscle. Frame size (small, medium, or large-boned) also affects your ideal range by several kilograms. Age matters too—muscle naturally decreases with age, so healthy weight ranges may shift over time. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds (18.5–22.9 for healthy weight) because these populations face higher health risks at the same BMI. Your GP can assess your individual circumstances and discuss what weight is realistic and healthy for you.

How We Built These Tools
Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.
All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.
We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What's the difference between healthy weight and ideal weight?
Healthy weight is a range based on BMI (18.5–24.9 for most UK adults) that minimises health risks. Ideal weight is more individual—it factors in your muscle mass, bone density, frame size, and personal health goals. Your healthy weight range might be 65–78 kg, but your ideal weight within that range depends on your fitness level and body composition. Use our BMI calculator to find your healthy range, then discuss your ideal target with your GP.
Should I aim for the top or bottom of my healthy weight range?
It depends on your individual circumstances. Athletes and very fit people may naturally sit higher in the range due to muscle mass. Older adults or those with lower muscle mass might sit lower. The key is feeling healthy, energetic, and free from weight-related health problems. Rather than targeting a specific number, focus on staying within your healthy BMI range and maintaining good fitness and nutrition.
Does healthy weight change if I'm pregnant or have a medical condition?
Yes. During pregnancy, healthy weight gain is expected and BMI guidelines don't apply. For people with certain medical conditions (thyroid disorders, PCOS, type 2 diabetes), healthy weight may differ. Always discuss your target weight with your GP, who can give personalised advice based on your health history.
Is BMI the only way to measure if my weight is healthy?
BMI is a useful starting point, but it's not perfect. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. Waist circumference is also important—NHS guidance suggests men should keep waist under 94cm (37in) and women under 80cm (31.5in) to reduce health risks. Body composition, fitness level, and how you feel are all relevant too.
What if I'm significantly above my healthy weight range?
If your BMI is above 25, talk to your GP. They can assess your individual health risk, discuss realistic weight loss targets, and explore support options including dietary advice, exercise programmes, or—if appropriate—prescription weight loss treatment. Even losing 5–10% of your body weight can improve blood pressure, blood sugar, and overall health.
