Safe Disposal Methods and Sharps Bin Requirements
Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled KwikPen containing a needle, which makes it a "sharp" under UK waste regulations. Used sharps must never go into household bins, recycling, or general waste — they pose injury and infection risks to bin workers and the environment.
- Get a sharps bin: Ask your GP, pharmacist, or nurse for a sharps bin (also called a sharps disposal container). These are often supplied free by the NHS or at low cost through pharmacies.
- Safely place the pen: After injection, immediately place the used KwikPen into your sharps bin. Never recap the needle — the pen has a safety mechanism that covers the needle automatically.
- Fill and seal: When your sharps bin is approximately three-quarters full, seal it securely with the lid provided.
- Return the bin: Take your sealed sharps bin to your GP surgery, pharmacy, or local waste disposal centre. They will arrange safe incineration at an authorised facility. This service is free in the UK.

Storage of Unopened and Used Pens
Unopened Mounjaro pens must be stored in a refrigerator at 2–8°C (in the original carton) until use. Once you begin using a pen, it can be stored at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 30 days. After 30 days, dispose of the pen even if it still contains medication — this is a safety requirement to ensure medication effectiveness and sterility.
Keep all pens away from direct sunlight, extreme heat, and freezing temperatures. If a pen has been frozen, do not use it. Store your sharps bin in a cool, dry place away from children and pets, and clearly label it as "sharps" or "biohazard".
