What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How HRI Water Balance Tablets Work

HRI water balance tablets are a herbal remedy containing natural ingredients like buchu leaf, uva ursi, and cornsilk, traditionally used to support mild water retention. They work as a natural diuretic — meaning they may increase water loss through urination. This is different from fat loss. When you lose water weight, the change appears on the scales quickly, but it returns when you rehydrate.

Important distinction: Losing water weight is not the same as losing body fat. A temporary reduction in water retention might show a 1–2 kg drop on the scales, but this does not represent meaningful or sustainable weight loss. The NHS distinguishes between fluid loss and fat loss because only fat loss improves long-term health markers like cholesterol, blood sugar control, and heart health.

Most user reviews of HRI water balance tablets report they feel less bloated after taking them, and some see a small temporary reduction on the scales. However, this effect typically lasts only while taking the tablets and returns once stopped.

Prescription Weight Loss vs Over-the-Counter Options

If you're looking for sustainable weight management in the UK, prescription weight loss medications have significantly stronger evidence behind them. Medications licensed for weight management — such as GLP-1 injections — work through different mechanisms: they help regulate appetite, reduce cravings, and support feeling fuller after smaller meals. Clinical trials show these can result in average weight loss of 15–21% of body weight over several months, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Unlike water loss from herbal diuretics, this represents actual fat loss and leads to lasting improvements in blood pressure, blood sugar, and cardiovascular health. If you're carrying excess weight and want evidence-based support, your GP can refer you to a specialist weight management service, or you can explore prescription options with a licensed prescriber following a clinical assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Do HRI water balance tablets really work for weight loss?

HRI tablets may help reduce temporary water retention and bloating, which some users report in reviews. However, this is water loss, not fat loss. The effect is temporary — weight typically returns when you stop taking them or rehydrate. For sustainable weight loss, evidence-based approaches like reduced-calorie diet, increased activity, and prescription weight loss medication are more effective.

Are HRI water balance tablets safe to take?

HRI water balance tablets are over-the-counter and generally well-tolerated by most people. However, they are not suitable for everyone — particularly those with kidney problems, pregnant women, or people taking certain medications. Always check the label and speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting any new supplement, especially if you have existing health conditions.

How does HRI compare to prescription weight loss injections like Wegovy?

HRI water balance tablets address water retention only, while prescription GLP-1 medications like Wegovy are designed to support fat loss by regulating appetite. Clinical trials show Wegovy helps achieve around clinically studied weight loss on average. Prescription medications require a clinical assessment and GP referral or private prescription, whereas HRI is available over-the-counter.

What's the difference between losing water weight and losing fat weight?

Water weight loss is temporary — it returns when you rehydrate or stop taking diuretics. Fat loss is sustainable and improves health markers like blood sugar and cholesterol. The NHS recommends losing weight at 0.5–1 kg per week through calorie deficit and activity, which represents mostly fat loss, not fluid loss.

Should I use HRI tablets if I'm trying to lose weight?

HRI tablets may provide temporary relief from bloating, but they are not a weight loss treatment. For meaningful, sustainable weight management, focus on calorie reduction, physical activity, and speaking to your GP about available options — including specialist weight management services or prescription weight loss medication if you meet eligibility criteria.
