What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How Mounjaro and Ibuprofen Work in Your Body

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by regulating appetite and blood sugar control. It slows gastric emptying — the rate at which food moves through your stomach — which is why nausea and stomach-related side effects are common, especially during dose titration.

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces pain, inflammation, and fever by blocking prostaglandin production in the body. Unlike paracetamol, NSAIDs like ibuprofen work by reducing inflammation at the source of pain.

The concern with combining them arises because Mounjaro already affects digestive function and stomach acid production. NSAIDs can increase stomach acid, irritate the stomach lining, and carry a small risk of gastrointestinal bleeding — particularly when taken repeatedly or at higher doses. Your GP or prescriber should assess whether ibuprofen is appropriate for you personally.

What Your GP Should Know Before You Take Pain Relief

Before taking ibuprofen or any NSAID while on Mounjaro, always tell your GP or healthcare provider that you're on tirzepatide treatment. This is especially important if you:

  • Have a history of stomach ulcers, gastric reflux, or indigestion
  • Have type 2 diabetes (Mounjaro affects blood sugar control)
  • Take other medications that interact with NSAIDs
  • Have kidney or liver problems
  • Are dehydrated or experiencing persistent vomiting from Mounjaro side effects

In many cases, paracetamol (acetaminophen) is a safer alternative to ibuprofen while on Mounjaro, as it carries less risk of stomach irritation. Your prescriber can recommend the most appropriate pain relief option for your individual situation. Never self-prescribe NSAIDs at higher doses or for prolonged periods without medical guidance when taking weight loss medication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is it safe to take ibuprofen while on Mounjaro?

Ibuprofen can be taken by some people on Mounjaro, but it's not suitable for everyone. Because Mounjaro affects stomach function and can cause nausea or indigestion, combining it with ibuprofen (an NSAID) may increase stomach irritation risk. Always consult your GP or prescriber before taking ibuprofen alongside tirzepatide.

What's a safer painkiller to use instead of ibuprofen with Mounjaro?

Paracetamol is generally considered safer than ibuprofen when taking Mounjaro. Paracetamol works differently — it's not an anti-inflammatory drug — so it carries less risk of stomach irritation or interaction with tirzepatide. Follow the recommended dose on the packet and consult your GP if pain persists.

Can Mounjaro interact with other NSAIDs like aspirin or naproxen?

Yes, all NSAIDs (including aspirin and naproxen) carry similar risks when combined with Mounjaro. If you take aspirin for heart health or blood thinning, inform your prescriber — some patients on Mounjaro may need different pain management strategies. Your GP can advise on safe alternatives.

What if I'm experiencing stomach pain while on Mounjaro — is ibuprofen safe then?

No. If you're experiencing stomach pain or nausea from Mounjaro itself, ibuprofen is not recommended as it may worsen stomach irritation. Contact your GP instead. Stomach pain can be a side effect of tirzepatide, particularly during dose titration, and your prescriber may adjust your dose or recommend other solutions.

Does Mounjaro affect how my body processes pain relief medications?

Mounjaro slows gastric emptying (the rate food and medications move through your stomach), which can affect how quickly pain relief reaches your bloodstream. This may delay pain relief onset. Your prescriber should review all your regular medications to ensure safe combinations and appropriate timing between doses.
