What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

NHS Healthy Weight Ranges by Height in Stone and Kg

The NHS defines healthy weight using BMI (body mass index). A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, which translates to different weights depending on your height. Here are NHS healthy weight ranges for common UK adult heights, expressed in both kilograms and stone:

  • 5ft 4in (163cm): Healthy weight 50–65kg (7st 11lbs to 10st 3lbs)
  • 5ft 6in (168cm): Healthy weight 55–73kg (8st 8lbs to 11st 6lbs)
  • 5ft 8in (173cm): Healthy weight 55–79kg (8st 8lbs to 12st 6lbs)
  • 5ft 10in (178cm): Healthy weight 60–85kg (9st 6lbs to 13st 5lbs)
  • 6ft (183cm): Healthy weight 65–92kg (10st 3lbs to 14st 6lbs)

If your current weight falls outside these ranges, our free BMI calculator above can show you exactly where you sit within the NHS categories (underweight, healthy, overweight, or obese) and what your healthy weight range is for your specific height.

NHS Categories and Ethnicity-Adjusted Thresholds

The NHS recognises that weight thresholds differ for people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean heritage. These groups face higher health risks at lower BMI levels, so the NHS recommends lower thresholds: a healthy BMI starts at 18.5 but overweight begins at 23.0 (not 25.0). Additionally, waist measurement matters: men should aim for under 94cm (37 inches) and women under 80cm (31.5 inches) for low health risk. Use our weight converter tool above to switch between kg, stone, and pounds, then cross-reference your measurements with NHS guidance or speak to your GP about your personal healthy weight target.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How do I convert kg to stone using the kg to stone calculator?

Simply enter your weight in kilograms into the calculator above — it instantly converts to stone and pounds. The formula is: kg ÷ 6.35029 = stone. For example, 70kg equals 11 stone 0.1lbs. Our calculator does this automatically, saving you the maths.

What is considered a healthy weight according to NHS guidelines?

A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, which varies by height. Use the BMI calculator on this page to find your healthy weight range. For most adults, this means maintaining a weight where your BMI falls within that band. Your GP can advise on your personal target.

Are there different healthy weight ranges for different ethnic backgrounds?

Yes. The NHS recommends lower thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean heritage — with overweight starting at BMI 23.0 rather than 25.0. If you belong to these groups, ask your GP about thresholds specific to your background.

How do I know if my weight in stone is healthy for my height?

Use the weight converter to change your kg to stone, then check the NHS healthy weight ranges in Section 2 above for your height. You can also calculate your BMI using our free calculator to see exactly which NHS category (underweight, healthy, overweight, or obese) your weight falls into.

Why do I need to convert kg to stone if the NHS uses kg?

Most UK adults think in stone and pounds for personal weight, even though NHS clinical records use kilograms. Converting helps you understand your weight in the units you're familiar with and compare yourself to UK health guidance more easily.
