Convert Kilograms to Stone — NHS Health Context

Converting kilograms to stone is straightforward using the standard metric to imperial conversion: divide kilograms by 6.35029 to get stone. However, understanding what your weight means for your health is more important than the number itself. This guide shows you how to convert kg to stone using UK measurements, then helps you interpret your weight against NHS health guidelines and BMI categories. Whether you're tracking your health or preparing for a GP appointment, knowing your weight in both units makes it easier to understand NHS weight guidance.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

NHS BMI Categories and Healthy Weight Ranges in kg and Stone

The NHS defines healthy weight using BMI (Body Mass Index) categories that apply to all UK adults. Your weight in both kg and stone helps you find your position within these ranges for your height. Use our free BMI calculator above to check your personal BMI instantly, or reference the ranges below:

  • Healthy weight (BMI 18.5–24.9): For a person 1.75m tall (5ft 9in), this is approximately 56–76 kg (8st 12lbs to 11st 13lbs)
  • Overweight (BMI 25–29.9): For the same height, roughly 77–95 kg (12st 2lbs to 14st 13lbs)
  • Obese Class I (BMI 30–34.9): Approximately 96–110 kg (15st 2lbs to 17st 5lbs)
  • Obese Class II (BMI 35–39.9): Roughly 111–125 kg (17st 6lbs to 19st 9lbs)

These ranges vary by height — taller individuals naturally weigh more within a healthy BMI. Calculate your exact healthy weight range using the weight converter on this page, then check your BMI category with our calculator.

Ethnicity-Adjusted Thresholds and Waist Measurement Guidance

The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean heritage, as these groups face higher health risks at lower weights. For these populations, a healthy BMI starts at 18.5 and extends only to 22.9 (not 24.9). Your GP can advise whether adjusted thresholds apply to you.

Beyond BMI, the NHS also recommends measuring waist circumference: men over 94cm (37 inches) and women over 80cm (31.5 inches) have increased health risk, even at a healthy BMI. This is because fat stored around the abdomen carries greater health risk than weight distributed elsewhere. Ask your GP to measure your waist or use a tape measure at home for context alongside your kg to stone conversion.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How do I convert 70kg to stone?

Divide 70kg by 6.35029, which equals approximately 11 stone (or 11st 0.1lbs). Use our free weight converter above to convert any weight instantly between kg, stone, and pounds.

What's the difference between stone and pounds in the UK?

In the UK, 1 stone equals exactly 14 pounds. Stone is commonly used for body weight, while pounds provide more precise measurements. For example, 70kg is 11 stone 0 pounds, or 154.3 lbs total. Our metric imperial conversion tool handles both units automatically.

Is my weight healthy according to NHS guidelines?

Whether your weight is healthy depends on your height and BMI. Convert your weight using our calculator, then check the NHS BMI categories above. For personalised advice, ask your GP — they can consider your overall health, not just BMI.

Why does the NHS sometimes use kg and sometimes stone?

The NHS uses kg for clinical measurements and official health thresholds, but understands that UK patients often think in stone and pounds. Both units are equivalent — convert between them as needed. Your GP can discuss your weight in whichever unit you're most comfortable with.

Do the NHS BMI ranges apply to everyone?

Standard NHS BMI ranges apply to most UK adults, but lower thresholds are recommended for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults due to higher health risks at lower weights. Your GP can advise whether adjusted BMI thresholds are relevant for you based on your ethnicity and health.
