Understanding Kilograms and Metres in UK Health

If you're checking your health metrics, you'll need to understand how kilograms (kg) and metres (m) work together — especially when calculating BMI or determining your healthy weight range according to NHS guidance. Both measurements are standard in UK clinical settings, though many people in Britain still use stone and pounds for body weight. This guide explains how kg and metres connect to your health assessment and what they mean for you.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How Kilograms and Metres Work Together

Kilograms (kg) measure your body weight in metric units, and metres (m) measure your height. Together, these form the basis of the BMI formula used by the NHS and healthcare professionals worldwide.

The BMI calculation is straightforward: weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. For example, if you weigh 70 kg and are 1.75 metres tall, your BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9, which falls in the healthy weight range of 18.5–24.9.

  • 1 metre = 100 centimetres (cm) = 39.37 inches
  • 1.75 metres = 175 cm = 5 feet 9 inches
  • 1.80 metres = 180 cm = 5 feet 11 inches

NHS Weight Guidance and Healthy Ranges

According to NHS guidance, a healthy BMI sits between 18.5 and 24.9 for most UK adults. If your weight in kilograms and height in metres place you above or below this range, your GP can advise whether lifestyle changes or further support is needed.

For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds — starting at 23.0 for overweight — because these groups face higher health risks at lower BMI levels.

Even modest weight loss of 5–10% can improve blood pressure, blood sugar control, and overall health. Our free weight converter helps you switch between kg, stone, and pounds for easier tracking alongside our progress tracker.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's the difference between kilogrammes and metres in health measurements?

Kilograms measure body weight; metres measure height. Together they calculate BMI, which the NHS uses to screen for healthy weight. Metres are divided into centimetres (100 cm = 1 m) for practical height measurement. Your GP uses both figures to assess your health risk.

How do I convert my weight from stone to kilograms for a health assessment?

Divide your weight in stone by 0.1575 to get kilograms. For example, 11 stone ÷ 0.1575 = approximately 70 kg. Use our free weight converter above to switch between stone, pounds, and kg instantly.

Is BMI calculated in kilograms and metres accurate for everyone?

BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may have a high BMI despite low body fat. It's also less accurate for elderly adults and during pregnancy. Your GP can assess your individual health context.

What's the healthy weight range in kilograms for a person who is 1.70 metres tall?

For 1.70 metres, a healthy BMI (18.5–24.9) corresponds to approximately 53–72 kg. However, your ideal weight also depends on age, muscle mass, and frame size. Your GP can advise on what's healthy for you personally.

Why does the NHS use kilograms and metres instead of stone and pounds?

Kilograms and metres are international metric standards used by healthcare systems worldwide, making it easier to compare health data across countries. However, UK patients often use stone for personal tracking. Our weight converter lets you work in either system.
