Man BMI Chart — UK Health Ranges Explained
A man's BMI chart shows where your weight falls across NHS health categories, from underweight through to severely obese. BMI (body mass index) is calculated using your height and weight, and the NHS uses standard ranges to help assess health risk. This guide explains the exact BMI thresholds for men in the UK, how to find your personal BMI, and why BMI matters alongside other health measures. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your exact BMI instantly based on your height and weight.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
NHS BMI Categories for Men — UK Standard Ranges
The NHS BMI formula is the same for all adults: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². The healthy BMI range for men is 18.5 to 24.9, which represents a balanced weight relative to your height. The BMI categories UK standard breaks down as follows: underweight is below 18.5; healthy weight is 18.5–24.9; overweight is 25.0–29.9; obese (Class I) is 30.0–34.9; obese (Class II) is 35.0–39.9; and severely obese is 40.0 and above.
For example, a man who is 5ft 8in (173cm) and weighs 70kg has a BMI of approximately 23.4, which falls in the healthy weight range. However, if the same man weighs 85kg, his BMI becomes approximately 28.5, which crosses the overweight BMI threshold into the overweight category. Use our BMI calculator on this page to check where your personal weight sits within these ranges.

BMI Limitations and What Else Matters
BMI limitations are important to understand: BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes or men with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat. BMI also ignores where fat is stored — abdominal fat carries greater health risk than fat stored elsewhere. The NHS recommends also measuring waist circumference: for men, a waist over 94cm (37 inches) indicates increased health risk, and over 102cm (40 inches) indicates high risk.
Your GP can provide personalised health advice based on your BMI, waist measurement, blood pressure, and other factors. Use our free weight converter to check your weight in different units (kg, stone, lbs), and track changes over time with our progress tracker to monitor your health journey.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is a healthy BMI for a man?
According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI for men is between 18.5 and 24.9. A man at 5ft 9in with a weight between approximately 55kg and 74kg would fall into this healthy range. Individual health depends on multiple factors, so your GP can provide personalised advice.
How do I calculate my BMI as a man?
Use the BMI formula: your weight in kg divided by your height in metres squared. For example, if you weigh 75kg and are 1.75m tall: 75 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 24.5 BMI. Our free BMI calculator above does this instantly.
What BMI is overweight for men?
The overweight BMI range is 25.0 to 29.9 according to NHS standards. A man in this range has increased health risks compared to the healthy range, but overweight does not automatically mean health problems — your GP can assess your individual situation.
Does BMI work for muscular men?
BMI has limitations for muscular men because it does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. A man with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat percentage. Waist circumference and body composition are more accurate measures in this case.
What should I do if my BMI is above 30?
If your BMI is 30 or above, speak to your GP who can assess your health, discuss lifestyle changes, and advise whether any treatment options are appropriate. NHS weight management services offer support, and your GP can refer you to specialist services if needed.
