What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

What To Eat When Starting Mounjaro

When you first start Mounjaro or increase your dose, your stomach may feel sensitive. Focus on small, frequent meals rather than three large ones — this reduces nausea risk and prevents overeating when appetite returns.

  • Week 1–2: Bland, easy-to-digest foods like toast with butter, rice, scrambled eggs, porridge, and soup (cooled slightly).
  • Week 2–4: Gradually introduce lean proteins, vegetables cooked until soft, and whole grains. Grilled chicken, white fish, and mashed sweet potato are well-tolerated.
  • After week 4: Return to normal foods but maintain smaller portions. Listen to your body — Mounjaro naturally reduces how much you want to eat.

Avoid high-fat, fried, and sugary foods, which often trigger nausea and are less nutritious. Stay hydrated throughout the day, especially if you experience diarrhoea or constipation — common Mounjaro side effects in the UK NHS context.

Simple Mounjaro-Friendly Meal Examples

Breakfast: Porridge made with semi-skimmed milk and a handful of berries, or scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast with sliced tomato.

Lunch: Grilled chicken breast with boiled new potatoes and steamed broccoli, or a light vegetable soup with crusty bread.

Dinner: Baked white fish with sweet potato and roasted carrot, or slow-cooked lean beef stew with plenty of vegetables.

Snacks (if needed): Natural yoghurt, banana, rice cakes with peanut butter, or a small handful of almonds. Many Mounjaro users find they need far fewer snacks as appetite naturally decreases. Use our free GLP-1 weight loss calculator to track your projected progress alongside these dietary adjustments.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Will I feel hungry on Mounjaro?

Most people experience significantly reduced appetite within 2–4 weeks of starting Mounjaro. This is how the medication works — it activates hormones that signal fullness to your brain. Some people barely feel hungry at all. If you do feel hungry, it typically means your dose hasn't reached its effective level yet, or you may benefit from a dose increase discussed with your prescriber.

What if I feel sick after eating on Mounjaro?

Nausea is very common, especially in the first 4 weeks or after a dose increase. Eat slowly, take smaller bites, chew thoroughly, and avoid high-fat or greasy foods. Cool foods are often better tolerated than hot ones. If nausea is severe or persistent beyond 4 weeks, contact your GP — your prescriber may adjust your dose or recommend anti-nausea support.

Can I eat normally while on Mounjaro?

Yes, but portion sizes will naturally be much smaller because Mounjaro reduces your appetite. Most people find they comfortably eat 40–50% less than before without feeling deprived. The key is choosing nutrient-dense foods — vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains — so your smaller portions still provide essential vitamins and minerals.

Should I count calories on Mounjaro?

Mounjaro works best combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Your prescriber may recommend approximately 500 kcal below your maintenance level for safe, sustainable weight loss of around 0.5–1 kg per week. Many people find calorie counting less necessary because reduced appetite naturally creates a deficit, but some benefit from tracking to ensure they're eating enough.

What about alcohol and caffeine on Mounjaro?

Alcohol may increase nausea and dehydration risk, especially in early weeks — avoid or limit to small amounts. Caffeine is generally fine but may worsen nausea for some people. Always stay well hydrated with water. If you have specific questions about your own diet or medication, consult your GP or the prescriber who issued your Mounjaro KwikPen prescription.
