What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How Mounjaro and Metronidazole Work Together

Mounjaro is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist injection used for weight management in UK adults. It works by slowing gastric emptying (how quickly food leaves your stomach) and reducing appetite. Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat bacterial infections and certain parasitic infections.

When taken together, there is no known direct chemical interaction between metronidazole and tirzepatide. However, because Mounjaro slows gastric emptying, it may affect how quickly metronidazole is absorbed from your stomach. This could potentially alter how quickly the antibiotic reaches therapeutic levels in your bloodstream. Additionally, if you experience nausea or reduced appetite as a Mounjaro side effect, this could interfere with completing a full course of metronidazole as prescribed.

  • Always inform your prescriber if you're taking metronidazole before starting Mounjaro
  • Tell your GP immediately if you develop severe nausea or vomiting while on either medication
  • Do not stop metronidazole early, even if you feel nauseous — infection must be fully a UK pharmacy
  • Space your doses as prescribed — do not adjust timing without medical advice

What to Tell Your GP or Prescriber

Before you're prescribed Mounjaro, provide a complete list of all medications you're currently taking — including metronidazole, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, and herbal products. This is essential for your prescriber to assess whether Mounjaro is safe for you.

If you develop signs of infection while taking Mounjaro, such as fever, unusual discharge, or persistent symptoms, contact your GP immediately. Similarly, if metronidazole side effects (including nausea, which is common) worsen after starting Mounjaro, report this to your healthcare team. Use our free BMI calculator to track your baseline measurements, as your prescriber may monitor your weight loss progress alongside infection treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is it safe to take metronidazole while on Mounjaro?

There is no major direct chemical interaction between metronidazole and tirzepatide. However, Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which may affect how quickly metronidazole is absorbed. Always inform your prescriber that you're taking metronidazole before starting Mounjaro, and report any severe nausea or vomiting immediately.

Will Mounjaro reduce how well metronidazole works?

Mounjaro may delay metronidazole absorption, but this doesn't mean it won't work. Your GP or prescriber can adjust timing if needed. Complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if Mounjaro reduces your appetite — infection treatment must not be interrupted.

What if I feel very sick while taking both medications?

Nausea is common with Mounjaro but should be reported if severe. If vomiting prevents you from keeping metronidazole down, or if you're unable to complete your antibiotic course, contact your GP immediately. They may need to adjust your Mounjaro dose or reschedule treatment.

Should I tell my prescriber I'm on metronidazole before starting Mounjaro?

Yes, absolutely. Provide a complete medication list to your prescriber before Mounjaro is prescribed. This ensures they can assess safety and advise on any necessary timing adjustments. Transparency about all medications is essential for safe prescribing.

What if metronidazole is prescribed while I'm already on Mounjaro?

Tell the doctor or healthcare professional prescribing metronidazole that you're on Mounjaro. They'll consider the interaction and may advise on spacing doses. Continue your Mounjaro as prescribed unless advised otherwise — do not stop either medication without medical guidance.
