What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

NHS Access vs Private Pricing for Mounjaro

NHS route: Mounjaro is available through NHS specialist tier 3 weight management services, but availability and waiting times vary significantly across different regions and integrated care boards (ICBs). When prescribed through the NHS, there is no direct cost to you beyond your standard prescription charge (currently £9.90 per item in England, or free if you qualify for exemptions). However, accessing NHS Mounjaro requires a referral from your GP to a specialist service, and demand far exceeds supply in many areas.

  • NHS prescriptions: £9.90 per item (England, 2024) if not exempt
  • Waiting lists: Can range from months to over a year depending on your region
  • Eligibility assessed by specialist clinicians

Private route: Private prescribers and online pharmacies offer faster access. The 7.5 mg dose typically costs between £180–£250 per month depending on the provider and any package discounts. This price is for the KwikPen device containing four weekly injections. Private access does not require NHS referral and can be arranged within days following an online clinical assessment.

How the 7.5 Mg Dose Fits Into Mounjaro Treatment

The 7.5 mg dose is an escalation step in the standard Mounjaro dose titration schedule. You typically start at 2.5 mg for four weeks, then increase to 5 mg, then 7.5 mg, with minimum four-week intervals between dose increases. The 7.5 mg dose helps your prescriber find the optimal therapeutic dose for your weight loss goals while managing side effects. Most people reach maintenance at either 10 mg, 12.5 mg, or the maximum 15 mg dose.

Each Mounjaro KwikPen contains four weekly injections of the same dose. You inject once per week, rotating injection sites between your stomach, upper thigh, or upper arm. If the 7.5 mg dose is working well for you with manageable side effects, you may choose to stay at this level rather than escalating further—discuss this with your prescriber. Our GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help you explore potential outcomes at different dose levels.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is included in the Mounjaro 7.5 mg price?

The price covers one KwikPen pre-filled injection device containing four weekly doses of 7.5 mg tirzepatide. You receive all four injections needed for that month. Storage, needles, and disposal guidance are included. Private prices typically range £180–£250 per pen depending on the provider and any loyalty discounts.

Is Mounjaro 7.5 mg available on the NHS in my area?

Mounjaro is NICE-approved for NHS use, but availability depends on your integrated care board (ICB). Some regions have limited stock or long waiting lists. Contact your GP and ask for a referral to your local tier 3 specialist weight management service. They can confirm current availability and waiting times in your area.

Why does the price vary between private providers?

Different online prescribing services and pharmacies set their own pricing based on acquisition costs, regulatory compliance, and clinical assessment fees. Some offer discounts for purchasing multiple months upfront or subscribing to ongoing treatment. Always compare providers and check what is included (e.g., clinical support, follow-up consultations).

Can I switch from private Mounjaro to NHS Mounjaro?

You can request an NHS referral from your GP at any time. However, switching may require stopping private treatment and waiting for NHS assessment and approval. Discuss the best transition plan with both your private prescriber and GP to avoid gaps in treatment.

What if I cannot afford the private cost of Mounjaro?

If private treatment is unaffordable, ask your GP about NHS referral pathways, even if waiting lists are long in your area. Some regions now have better access. Alternatively, discuss lower-cost alternatives like Saxenda (daily injection) or lifestyle-only approaches with your GP. Financial hardship schemes may sometimes be available through private providers.
