What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Signs and Symptoms of Mounjaro Allergic Reactions

True allergic reactions to tirzepatide are uncommon, but serious reactions can happen. Immediate warning signs include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing or shortness of breath; severe dizziness or fainting; hives or widespread rash; and severe itching. These are medical emergencies — call 999 immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

Less severe allergic responses may include mild rash, itching at the injection site, or minor swelling. Most injection site reactions (redness, bruising, mild pain) are not allergic reactions — they're common and usually resolve within hours. However, if injection site symptoms worsen or spread beyond the immediate area, contact your GP or prescriber the same day.

Keep in mind that Mounjaro's most common side effects — nausea, diarrhoea, and stomach pain — are not allergic reactions. They're expected responses to how the medication works on your digestive system and typically improve as your body adjusts to each dose.

What to Do if You Experience an Allergic Reaction

If you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction, call 999 immediately or go to your nearest accident and emergency (A&E) department. For less severe symptoms like mild rash or swelling, contact your GP or the prescriber who issued your Mounjaro prescription the same day — they may advise stopping the medication temporarily.

Always inform your healthcare provider of any allergic reactions you've had, especially to GLP-1 medications or other injectable treatments. This helps them assess whether Mounjaro is safe for you or whether a different weight management option might be more suitable. Report serious side effects to the Yellow Card scheme (MHRA's pharmacovigilance system) via your GP or online at mhra.gov.uk — this helps monitor medication safety across the UK.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's the difference between an allergic reaction and a normal Mounjaro side effect?

Allergic reactions involve immune system response (swelling, hives, difficulty breathing), while common side effects like nausea and diarrhoea are how tirzepatide affects digestion. Injection site redness or mild bruising are also normal and not allergic. True allergies are rare but require immediate medical attention.

Should I stop taking Mounjaro if I develop a rash?

Not necessarily — mild rash can occur for non-allergic reasons. Contact your GP or prescriber to describe the rash. If it's spreading, you have difficulty breathing, or you develop facial swelling, seek emergency care immediately. Your prescriber will advise whether to continue or stop the medication.

Can you be allergic to tirzepatide but not to other GLP-1 medications?

Possibly, though it's uncommon. Cross-reactivity between tirzepatide and semaglutide (Wegovy) is possible since both are GLP-1 agonists, but the risk is low. If you've had an allergic reaction to Mounjaro, your prescriber may recommend avoiding similar medications or suggest testing before switching to alternatives.

How do I report an allergic reaction to Mounjaro in the UK?

Report serious side effects via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at mhra.gov.uk, or ask your GP to report on your behalf. Also inform the prescriber who issued your prescription immediately. Reporting helps the MHRA monitor medication safety and protects other patients in the UK.

Are there people who shouldn't take Mounjaro due to allergy risk?

Yes. If you've had a previous allergic reaction to tirzepatide or semaglutide, you shouldn't take Mounjaro. If you have a history of severe allergies to injectable medications or any Mounjaro ingredients, your prescriber will assess whether the benefits outweigh risks or recommend a different approach to weight management.
