What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Why Does Mounjaro Cause Sickness?

Mounjaro is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist — it activates two natural hormone pathways in your gut that help regulate appetite and blood sugar. When you start Mounjaro or increase your dose, your body is experiencing a new signal to these receptors. This can temporarily affect your stomach and digestive system, leading to nausea, vomiting, or a general feeling of sickness.

The sickness typically occurs because Mounjaro slows how quickly food leaves your stomach (gastric emptying). This effect is strongest in the first few weeks and often reduces over time as your body adjusts. Additionally, the appetite-suppressing effect of the medication means you may feel less interested in food, which some people interpret as nausea or queasiness.

Clinical data from the SURMOUNT trials showed that nausea was very common (affecting more than 1 in 10 people) in the early weeks, but the severity and frequency typically decreased as treatment continued.

Managing Sickness While Taking Mounjaro

If you're experiencing sickness on Mounjaro, there are practical steps you can take: eat small, frequent meals rather than large ones; avoid fatty or greasy foods; stay hydrated with water or sugar-free drinks; and avoid strong smells or triggers that make nausea worse. Some people find that eating slowly and chewing thoroughly helps.

Ginger, peppermint tea, and vitamin B6 may offer natural relief, though always check with your GP before adding supplements. If sickness is severe, your prescriber may suggest temporarily delaying your dose increase or adjusting your injection technique. Most people find nausea reduces significantly after 2–4 weeks at each dose level. If sickness persists beyond this or significantly impacts your quality of life, contact your GP — you have options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How long does sickness last when you start Mounjaro?

Nausea is usually worst in the first 1–2 weeks after starting or increasing your dose. For most people, it reduces significantly after 2–4 weeks as your body adjusts. Sickness does not always occur, and severity varies between individuals. If it persists beyond 4 weeks, contact your prescriber.

Should I stop taking Mounjaro if I feel sick?

No — do not stop without speaking to your prescriber. Nausea is a common, manageable side effect that often improves with time. However, contact your GP or prescriber if sickness is severe, affecting your ability to eat or drink, or if you cannot manage it with practical steps. They may suggest dose adjustments or other support.

What foods help if Mounjaro is making me feel sick?

Eat bland, easily digestible foods: boiled rice, crackers, toast, soup, cooked vegetables, lean protein (chicken, fish), and smoothies. Avoid fatty, spicy, or heavy foods. Stay hydrated. Eat smaller portions more frequently rather than large meals. Ginger and peppermint tea may also help ease nausea naturally.

Is sickness a sign that Mounjaro is not right for me?

Not necessarily. Nausea is a very common, expected side effect — especially in the first few weeks — and does not mean the medication is unsuitable for you. However, if sickness is severe, persists for more than a month, or you cannot manage it, discuss alternatives with your prescriber. Some people may be better suited to other weight management options like Wegovy (semaglutide).

Can my GP help if I'm feeling very sick on Mounjaro?

Yes. Contact your GP if nausea is severe, you cannot eat or drink, you are losing weight too quickly, or you are vomiting regularly. Your GP can assess whether you need anti-nausea medication, dose adjustments, or a temporary pause in treatment. They can also rule out other causes of sickness unrelated to Mounjaro. Always inform your prescriber of any new or worsening symptoms.
