What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Accessing Mounjaro: NHS vs Private Routes

In the UK, you can access Mounjaro through two main routes: NHS specialist services or private prescribing.

NHS Route: Your GP can refer you to a tier 3 specialist weight management service if you meet eligibility criteria (BMI ≥30, or BMI 27–29.9 with weight-related health conditions). NICE has approved tirzepatide for NHS use, but availability varies significantly by region and ICB (integrated care board). Waiting lists can be lengthy — some areas have waits of 12+ months. Once assessed by the specialist team, they may prescribe Mounjaro alongside lifestyle support.

Private Route: You can obtain a Mounjaro prescription through a GPhC-registered online pharmacy following a virtual clinical assessment with a UK-licensed prescriber. This route doesn't require NHS referral and is typically faster. Prescribers assess your medical history, current medications, and eligibility before issuing a prescription. Once issued, the prescription is dispensed by the pharmacy.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Can I buy Mounjaro without a prescription in the UK?

No. Mounjaro is prescription-only in the UK. You cannot purchase it over the counter or from an unlicensed seller. You must obtain a valid prescription from a UK-licensed GP or prescriber, whether through NHS services or private online consultations.

How do I know if I'm eligible for Mounjaro on the NHS?

NHS eligibility requires a BMI of 30 or above, or 27–29.9 with weight-related health conditions. Your GP can assess you initially, but you'll be referred to a specialist tier 3 weight management service for final assessment and prescription. Availability varies by region.

What's the difference between accessing Mounjaro privately vs on the NHS?

NHS access is free but involves specialist referral and potentially long waiting lists. Private access is faster but costs £129–£320/month depending on dose. Both require a clinical assessment. Private routes avoid NHS waiting times but are not subsidised.

What happens after I get my Mounjaro prescription?

Your prescription is sent to a GPhC-registered pharmacy, which dispenses your Mounjaro KwikPen. You'll receive it in a refrigerated package. You inject once weekly — your prescriber will guide dosing. Track your progress using our free progress tracker and attend any follow-up appointments with your prescriber.

Is Mounjaro the same as Ozempic?

No. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. Ozempic contains semaglutide and is licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight management. Wegovy (also semaglutide) is the licensed weight management version. Mounjaro and Wegovy are different medications with different mechanisms and trial data.
