How to Increase Your Mounjaro Dose Safely
If you're taking Mounjaro (tirzepatide), you'll start on a low dose and gradually increase it over several months. This process, called dose titration, helps your body adjust to the medication and allows your prescriber to find the right dose for you. Understanding when and how your dose increases — and what to expect — can help you manage treatment effectively. Always follow your prescriber's guidance, as individual titration schedules may vary based on your tolerance and response.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
Mounjaro Dose Titration Schedule in the UK
Mounjaro comes in five doses that increase gradually over time:
- Weeks 1–4: 2.5 mg once weekly (starting dose)
- Weeks 5–8: 5 mg once weekly (first escalation)
- Weeks 9–12: 7.5 mg once weekly
- Weeks 13–16: 10 mg once weekly
- Weeks 17–20: 12.5 mg once weekly
- Week 21+: 15 mg once weekly (maximum dose)
You must wait at least 4 weeks on each dose before your prescriber increases it. This allows your body to adapt and helps them assess how well the medication is working for you. Your prescriber may keep you on a lower dose if it's working well — not everyone needs the maximum 15 mg dose. If you experience persistent nausea or other side effects, your prescriber may delay or modify your titration schedule.

What Happens During Dose Increases
When your Mounjaro dose increases, you'll receive a new KwikPen with the higher dose. Each pen contains four weekly injections. Side effects like nausea often improve as your body adjusts to each new dose — this typically takes a few days to a week. However, some people experience temporary nausea when escalating doses, which usually settles within 1–2 weeks. Keep a food and symptom diary to track how you feel at each dose level. Use our free GLP-1 weight loss calculator to project potential outcomes at different doses. Always report persistent side effects or concerns to your prescriber — they can adjust your schedule or keep you at your current dose if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
How long do I stay on each Mounjaro dose before increasing?
You must remain on each dose for a minimum of 4 weeks before your prescriber considers increasing it. This allows your body to adjust fully and helps your prescriber see how well that dose is working for you. Some people stay on the same dose long-term if it's effective.
Will I experience side effects when my Mounjaro dose increases?
Nausea is the most common side effect when escalating doses, but it usually improves within a few days to a week as your body adapts. Other side effects like stomach discomfort or changes in appetite may also occur temporarily. These typically settle as you adjust. Report persistent effects to your prescriber.
Can I skip a dose increase or stay on a lower Mounjaro dose?
Yes. Your prescriber may recommend staying on a lower dose if it's working effectively for you — the goal is the dose that works best for your body, not the highest dose. You cannot stop or change your dose without consulting your prescriber first.
What's the difference between Mounjaro and Wegovy dose schedules?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) starts at 2.5 mg and increases to a maximum of 15 mg weekly. Wegovy (semaglutide) starts at 0.25 mg and increases to a maximum of 2.4 mg weekly. Mounjaro is a dual GIP and GLP-1 agonist, while Wegovy is a GLP-1 agonist only. Your prescriber will recommend the most suitable option based on your health.
How do I know if my Mounjaro dose is working at my current level?
Your prescriber will assess weight loss progress, appetite changes, and how you feel. Use our free progress tracker to log your weight weekly — this gives you and your prescriber clear data. If you're losing weight and tolerating the dose well, your prescriber may keep you at that level rather than increasing further.
