How Much Is Mounjaro Going Up — UK Dose Guide
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) doses increase gradually over several weeks as part of a structured titration schedule. Your prescription starts at 2.5 mg and typically increases every four weeks, stepping up to a maximum of 15 mg once weekly. This gradual increase helps your body adjust to the medication and allows your prescriber to monitor how you respond. Understanding this dose escalation process can help you manage expectations and prepare for what to expect at each stage. Use our free GLP-1 weight loss calculator to explore how different Mounjaro doses may support your weight loss journey.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
Mounjaro Dose Titration Schedule — How Much Does It Go Up?
Mounjaro is a prescription-only once-weekly GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist injection. The standard dose titration schedule begins at 2.5 mg and increases in weekly steps:
- Weeks 1–4: 2.5 mg (starting/adjustment dose)
- Weeks 5–8: 5 mg (first increase of 2.5 mg)
- Weeks 9–12: 7.5 mg (increase of 2.5 mg)
- Weeks 13–16: 10 mg (increase of 2.5 mg)
- Weeks 17–20: 12.5 mg (increase of 2.5 mg)
- Week 21+: 15 mg (maximum maintenance dose)
Each dose is delivered via the Mounjaro KwikPen — a pre-filled auto-injection pen. Your prescriber may adjust this schedule based on your individual response, side effects, or health conditions. Some people remain on a lower dose if it provides good results with manageable side effects. Clinical trials showed that higher doses (particularly 15 mg) resulted in greater average weight loss — approximately clinically studied weight loss at 15 mg — but individual results vary significantly.

Why Does Mounjaro Dose Increase, and What Should You Expect?
Gradual dose titration allows your body to adjust to Mounjaro and helps identify the lowest effective dose for you. At each increase, some people experience temporary nausea, diarrhoea, or reduced appetite — these side effects often settle within a few days as your body adapts. Your prescriber will assess your progress and tolerability before each dose step. If side effects are severe or persistent, your dose may be held at the current level longer, or increased more slowly. The BMI calculator on this page can help you track your baseline BMI, and our progress tracker lets you log how you're responding at each dose stage. Always contact your prescriber if you experience severe stomach pain, vomiting, or signs of pancreatitis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
How long does each Mounjaro dose increase take?
Each dose is maintained for a minimum of 4 weeks before increasing to the next level. This allows your body to adjust and lets your prescriber assess how well the medication is working for you. If side effects occur, your prescriber may keep you on the same dose longer.
Can my Mounjaro dose increase be slowed down?
Yes. If you experience uncomfortable side effects like nausea or diarrhoea, your prescriber can slow the titration schedule. You may stay on a lower dose longer, or your prescriber may recommend pausing the increase until side effects improve.
What's the maximum Mounjaro dose in the UK?
The maximum licensed dose is 15 mg once weekly. Not everyone needs to reach this dose — many people achieve good weight loss results at 10 mg or 12.5 mg. Your prescriber will recommend the dose that balances effectiveness with tolerability.
Is Mounjaro dose titration the same as Wegovy?
No. Mounjaro starts at 2.5 mg and increases by 2.5 mg steps to a maximum of 15 mg. Wegovy (semaglutide) starts at 0.25 mg and increases by smaller increments to a maximum of 2.4 mg. Both follow a gradual titration approach but on different schedules.
Will I lose weight at every dose increase?
Weight loss varies individually. Some people see steady loss at each dose increase, while others plateau at a particular dose. Clinical trials showed average weight loss increased with higher doses, but individual response depends on diet, activity level, genetics, and other factors.
