Is Mounjaro Available Orally in the UK?

There is no oral (tablet) form of Mounjaro available in the UK. Mounjaro is only available as a once-weekly injection using a pre-filled KwikPen device. This injectable form has been approved by the MHRA for weight management in UK adults. While Eli Lilly has researched oral formulations globally, these are not yet licensed in the UK. If you're exploring Mounjaro as a weight loss option, understanding how to access the injection and what it costs — whether through the NHS or privately — is essential for making an informed decision about whether it's right for you.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How Much Does Mounjaro Cost in the UK?

Mounjaro costs vary significantly depending on where you access it. Through NHS specialist weight management services, the medication may be free at the point of use if you meet eligibility criteria and are referred by your GP — though availability and waiting times vary considerably by region. Via private online prescribing, a single KwikPen (containing 4 weekly doses) typically costs between £129 and £320 per month, depending on your dose. Starting doses like 2.5 mg are usually at the lower end of this range, while higher maintenance doses (10 mg to 15 mg) cost more. Some private prescribers offer tirzepatide (the generic active ingredient) at slightly lower prices than the branded Mounjaro. Costs may include the consultation fee, the prescription fee, and the medication itself — clarify the total cost upfront with any provider. Using our GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help you understand potential outcomes at different dose levels.

NHS vs Private Access: Routes to Getting Mounjaro

NHS route: Ask your GP for a referral to your local tier 3 or tier 4 specialist weight management service. NICE has approved tirzepatide for use within NHS services for eligible adults. However, waiting lists can extend from weeks to over a year depending on your region, and access varies significantly across the UK. Some ICBs (Integrated Care Boards) have limited availability.

Private route: Complete an online consultation with a UK-licensed GP or prescriber. If clinically appropriate, a prescription is issued and dispensed by a GPhC-registered pharmacy. This typically takes 24–48 hours. No NHS referral is needed. You pay privately for each prescription. Track your progress with our free progress tracker alongside whichever route you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is there an oral tablet form of Mounjaro available in the UK?

No. Mounjaro is only available as a once-weekly injection in the UK. There is no licensed oral (tablet) version. The injection is administered using a pre-filled KwikPen device into the stomach, thigh, or upper arm. Always inject as directed by your prescriber.

How long does it take to get Mounjaro on the NHS?

Waiting times vary significantly by region. Many areas have waiting lists of 6–12 months or longer for tier 3 specialist weight management services. Some regions have shorter waits or faster access. Contact your local ICB or ask your GP about current waiting times in your area.

Can I get Mounjaro privately without seeing an NHS GP first?

Yes. You can access Mounjaro through private online prescribing without an NHS referral. You'll complete an online consultation with a UK-licensed prescriber who assesses your medical history and suitability. If approved, a prescription is issued to a GPhC-registered pharmacy. This is faster than the NHS route but you pay the full cost privately.

What does a private online Mounjaro consultation involve?

You complete a detailed health questionnaire covering weight, medical history, current medications, allergies, and lifestyle. The prescriber reviews this and may contact you with follow-up questions. If you're suitable, a prescription is issued. Consultations typically cost £20–£50 and are often refunded if a prescription is issued.

Is Mounjaro more expensive than Wegovy in the UK?

Costs are comparable between Mounjaro and Wegovy (semaglutide) when purchased privately — both typically range from £129–£320 per month depending on dose. Both are prescription-only and require clinical assessment. Your prescriber will advise which is more suitable based on your individual health.
