What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How Mounjaro Mg Doses Work in the UK

Mounjaro is a prescription-only, once-weekly injectable medicine containing tirzepatide. In the UK, it is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with weight-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or cardiovascular disease. The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) has approved Mounjaro and assigns it Black Triangle (▼) status, meaning it requires additional monitoring.

Doses are provided in a pre-filled KwikPen and escalated gradually over weeks. Starting at 2.5 mg, you remain on each dose for a minimum of 4 weeks before your prescriber considers increasing to the next level. This slow titration helps your body adjust and allows your prescriber to assess how well the medication is working and whether side effects are manageable. Maximum dose is 15 mg once weekly.

  • Weeks 1–4: 2.5 mg (starting dose)
  • Weeks 5–8+: 5 mg
  • Weeks 9–12+: 7.5 mg
  • Weeks 13–16+: 10 mg
  • Weeks 17–20+: 12.5 mg
  • Week 21+: 15 mg (maximum)

Mounjaro Mg on the NHS vs Private Routes in the UK

NHS access to Mounjaro is through specialist tier 3 weight management services, not standard GP prescription. Your GP can refer you to your local ICB (Integrated Care Board) specialist service, but availability and waiting times vary significantly across the UK. Some regions have substantial waiting lists. When prescribed through the NHS, your dose and ongoing care are managed by the specialist team.

Private prescribing offers faster access without an NHS referral. Following an online clinical assessment with a UK-licensed prescriber, Mounjaro may be dispensed by a GPhC-registered pharmacy. Whether you choose the NHS or private route, a qualified prescriber will assess your individual eligibility based on your BMI, health conditions, and medical history before determining your starting dose and escalation plan.
